With the bullet trajectory dropping steeply into the animal I always make sure my point of aim is higher up the animal than I would normally aim at a closer distance, the bullet impact on this shot put a fair amount of trama into the spine on the entry side hence its drop in its tracks reaction. It's always nice to see them laying there belly up from the spot your shot from ;-).

No mate, we made sure we identified and planned what spur looked best to go up from below, before we left the spot I shot from. There was a quad track running through the valley floor right below the deer, so quad to there, then maybe 100 yards or so up spur until we found the bigger clearing to the right, then a short sidel across to the deer. Almost gentleman's hunting, i wouldnt be shooting them that far away unless i knew we could get the bike pretty close and the recovery was reasonable. It all worked out pretty well.

That same morning prior, we passed up another 3 deer between 450 and 550 yards that were in absolute pricks of places where the recovery would have been hellish.

As I'm getting older I'm slowely starting to learn the ole 'Smarter not harder' ;-)

No it passed thru and exited. Out of interest my app says the impact velocity was 1686 fps and retained energy of 1022 ft lbs. So the velocity is getting to the point where id expect itd be getting marginal for reasonably expansion.

LOL classic, the neighbors is a few more ridges over.

Would I be correct in assuming your only getting 3050fps because of the shorter barrel ? Im using the same bullet in a 7mmremmag and getting 3040fps out of a 24" barrel .

Only 3,050 fps?? The cartridge is a 7mm SAUM, with a 22 inch barrel, im only burning 63gr of RE26.
