Thread: 12v outboard

So far in life I have managed to avoid the ownership of a boat, not including kayaks....

Getting bored at work and thinking I need me a boat..... How far have 12 or 24v outboards come? With new lithium batteries and a light enough boat with bugger all in it would it get up on the plane?

Like the idea slowly cruising around making no noise, obviously going to be rather limited to fair weather due to being so small and short trips depending on battery storage

They have come a long way from the trolling motor days.

Lithium batteries are the way to go obviously... the main point of difference I have read are ...... motor submersed vs motor out of water, and battery location, fixed on motor/ removable from motor/ separate from motor.

There is plenty on you tube on the subject, I had been following an English cruising couple with their electric OB experience.

Higher speed/ planning... not sure it is yet a financially viable option.

just by an internal combustion powered or you are carrying lots of weight for nothing.

I think @223nut really wants it to sneak around Patterson inlet quiet and hands free shooting those pretty little deer in full stealth mode
Maybe camouflage the boat as an iceberg
Or as one of those very friendly white sharks I kept bumping into when I was down there last

Go 4 cycle petrol. Liquid fuels have much greater energy density than batteries. For the same weight you will have much greater range and power (and as a result, safety).

Sad thing is when on the island I am usually working, therefore no time to go boating.... (but somehow manage to find time to go hunting)
@akaroa1 have a trip coming up to freshwater river and the idea of floating with a rifle has a certain appeal, till someone take a shot at the wrong angle and everything heavy goes to the bottom.....

Ok so the planning idea isn't likely to work.... will keep doing some research.... other idea was whack the tail of a sea kayak and mount something..... or just get a sit on top (have a loathing for them having spent many hours in a 'proper' boat let's see you roll that thing in a half decent rapid)

I have two Canadians. The smaller one has a square transom (is that the term?) to take a small outboard - though I haven’t done that

Canadians offer significantly better stability than a sit-upon, with good secondary buoyancy, although they’re a pain if the breeze gets up because of their higher profile.
Personally I’d never go the sit-upon route - you’re working all the time to maintain balance. Kneel and sit on your heels in a Canadian and you can let go of everything to fish/shoot - I’ve done it.

The Inlet is just about perfect for electric I'd say, if you can get a thing going with someone with a boat shed with power like the ones in Thule, Watercress or the like then it would open a lot of opportunity, just pull the boat up, leave it charging till the next tide, put it back on a mooring. Have a look at lead carbon batteries, they are only half the cost of lithium, but have about the same sort of charge cycle life.

I actually have a boat I bought for this exact purpose (a rowing/sailing 18' dinghy) but the idea is just languishing in the shed here. If you arrange a boatshed I'll get the boat into it and we can both use it!!

@223nut I'm keen to fly to masons bay for a weeks hunting, walk back through to fresh water and packraft all the way back to the village
Its mostly southerly wind in there and blowing you home
And you can really move downwind with the packraft sail up
Theres often some bloody nice surf to hot dog in also

I snuck up in the lee of faith, hope and charity islands in a howling southerly.
Poked my nose out into the wind, popped the sail up and shot back to the wharf

Sounds like a good adventure, packraft would allow easy access to fish and explore south of the gutter in nice weather. Just avoid the water taxi at high tide on the way down the river!

Thats not quite right . . . I like being in boats and sailing etc but I DON'T like getting wet. And having spent 10 years or so with my boat moored in Faith, Hope and Charity and sailing a lot in Island waters, I have a healthy respect for the weather there.
