Thats why I said to check the oil level to make sure it wasnt making oil.

I would suspect losing of prime is due to the pre filter leaking too. Maybe a plastic part has been cracked or something during the injector work. Look for something unusual.

You could try to pressure the system to see if you could spot some bubbles or hear air hissing etc. It can be a pita to track down.

    Very frustrating.

Yeah, the clear hose trick is one of the easiest ways as the heating of everything under the bonnet can cause things to close up making it hard for the shop to find leaks if the truck is driven straight in and start testing. Fit hose, park up and see where the air collects if any. Kind of points straight away where the leak is if not exactly what is leaking. These can be a royal pain, especially if once it's going and warmed up it stays going and it's when it's cold the problems surface.

We see more issues with these types of auxiliary fuel filters than almost anything else.
    1) 99% can't handle the flow rate
    2) they leak like a sieve and do exactly what the op is experiencing

My no1 question would be why have you got 1 fitted?

I could see the point if you're filling from an unfiltered doubtful source, but if you only use commercial servos why bother?

We fill from bulk tank at work & other dubious sources.
    water contamination not unknown.

Take a look what I got out of my pre-filter water trap, on a vehicle only filled at commercial fuel sources.

This is exactly why you bother:

I’d be keen to know a bit more about the “99% can’t handle the flow rate” part. That doesn’t ring true to me. I’ve worked with large fleets of Land Cruiser and Hilux that all ran pre-factory and final (post-factory) filters right down to 5 µm.

Never seen or heard of one of these that couldn’t handle the flow rate.

    IT SEEMS TO BE FIXED.
Thanks to all for the suggestions.

SPILL RAIL WAS CORRODED AT WASHER SEATS.
Not bad enough to leak fuel but would suck air at start up.
Fitted new line and all good so far.

Had it back 3days & it's starting like it should.
Took a while but got there eventually.

Again thanks . It certainly caused some head scratching.

I've picked up bug/water contaminated fuel only filling at commercial fill stations. Most commercial (or more correctly retail) fill sites are not using 'filters' - more a case of strainers with a fine gauze that will only pick up solids. The 'bug' as it was called actually wasn't cellular in form so we aren't even sure if it was bug or if it was a bit of water mixed with an additive or treatment of some sort. Rather weird though...

Yep, these little bastards do. You want to try a electronic fault combined with a crook fuel pressure modulation valve (or suction control valve). A LOT of time on a data logger setup to get the fault to repeat to be able to quantify WHY the engine management system was going into limp mode, replacing the FPMV sorted out the limp mode but it still has some weird engine and body management stuff going on. Like the cruise control randomly not working at over 80Km/H but OK at less and the parking sonar sensors going into error mode after driving for a random amount but turn the thing on and off and they are fine (or maybe you turn the thing on and go into reverse and they don't work...). Some form of CANBUS loom glitch is the operating theory for this one!

No, Ranger. But I've had a work acquaintance that had similar weirdities on the LoLux - finally tracked it down to a pinch in the loom under the sheathing which damaged the insulation on a wire and allowed the middle of the wire to go green and fuzzy. Not really the fault of the vehicle as such - I expect my vehicle's issue will be similar because it's showing the same sort of weird faults in systems that aren't directly related except for the control system. Also, the faults aren't all out of the same control module so it's unlikely that multiple modules are going bad at the same time. It's just finding the cause of it - could be anything from a plug connector that doesn't like getting warm, to a pinch or bad section of a cable, to a crusty earth somewhere, to a sensor that's not playing the game and putting out a bad signal at the wrong time. Such a pain in the bum, as the error codes if it throws any are like 'parking sensor not responding' or 'such and such failed to communicate' - so helpful. Why did it fail to communicate you piece of sh**!

Probably failed to comunicate that as well. Oh the days when there were only about 10 wires in the engine bay
