Shame Johnson/Evinrude/OMC/Bombardier are not making the Etecs anymore....They didn't weather the storm of covid unfortunately.

I think the storm weathered them long before covid .a couple new boats floating round for sale with new etec on them
You'd be pretty keen to buy one given there will be no parts amd dealership assistance on them.

yeah cos there's no such thing as aftermarket companies willing to take advantage of a readymade market aye

Something about waterproof cowling, exhaust design, engine mapping, injectors etc etc.

Alta, the brains behind the concept went Tits up about 5 years ago. But their promo video of the dirt bike they were designing/building was MOST impressive

True, but like it or not E-tecs have zero resale value now. To the point that if they break its very questionable if it's worth fixing. Try to trade one in on a new outboard and see what responce you get. I always liked the concept of them but seems like in the evolutionary race between 4S and injected 2S the 4S has won. Second hand boats with them on are not selling without a significant discount.

That's the maritime nz hot sheet.

It's an interesting argument, 4s uses less fuel at idle than two stroke - that's where I think they calculate the better environmental efficiency. But if you're travelling at full speed for the majority of the time?

Also the greater weight of the engine itself requires more energy expended to get on the plane, everything else being equal. A long-ish lead time and most of the affected engines will be consumed by the expiry date anyway. I'd also have no idea how they'd police this, considering there is no registration system for recreational boats in NZ...

They were talking about a ban on bullbars back in the 90's and that never happened. With more people jumping on the emissions bandwagon now they may manage to get more things onto the naughty list.

Yeah unfortunately weather there is aftermarket parts or not.its more like not worth the hassle buying one .unless your prepared for possibility of low respect value or maybe parts hard to get. Got a friend with a 150 etec and he was offered such a low amount for a trade he said it's worth keeping and waiting for it to break and when the parts to fix exceed value then that's time to buy new again.

Funny, in commercial there have been a couple of problems with the Yamaha's - that weren't covered by the service schedule too. But then those are high hour engines and the issues would probably (well apart from the leg corrosion one) probably not show up for rec users.

A mate has a 645 Aqualite which having spent a fair bit of time on led me down the path of wanting one. There is one on TM with a 175 Evenrude Fitch Ram which is the predecessor to the Etecs. As it is just down the road from me I went and had a look, it's a very low hrs boat which clearly has spent more time in the shed than on the water. He wants 70k for it. Trailer is getting tired and at the least would need a regalve. If you can find someone to do it as Perrys in Hamilton have apparently stopped.

The thing is what's my worst-case situation. I buy it, outboard shits itself in a reasonably short space of time and I need to replace it. New 150 4S fitted will have no change out of 30k and a new trailer for it will be close or around 10k. I'm now at 110k.

Why would I go there? Lot better to find one with a better motor already to go.

Yes, had a look at another 645 Aqualite in Golden bay (was down south on holiday) with a 2007 Yamaha 200hp V6. These are very well known for exhaust corrosion issues. 5 to 6k to replace and while power head gaskets have been done the exhaust has not.
