Thread: 4x4 Paint job options

The paint shop mates and I use is Allied Auto Bodies at 109 Orbell St, Chch. 03 379 0208. Owner sold out recently and business now owned by chinese chap Edward, but seems same staff and philosophy. We've used them for occasional jobs for 10 years for the trucks and my sportscar panel touchups and found their work good - and at good prices. Just tell him you want a 4x4 panel respray job - and it doesn't need to be Queen St flash. Quotes by the panel.

So just doing a bit more looking into Roberlo Robliner, i will have a chat to the actual guy doing the spray painting and get some feed back around it. How many coats, the prep, costings etc, to give you some idea around the place that is doing the work, the vehicle will be there for two weeks, but as Mudgripz mentioned he used them in the past and they are well regarded. Im not going to post the quote just yet as i have an idea so IF you are genuinely interested in getting your vehicle done let me know i will get mine done first get some before and after pics and post them, going to be honest i dont think the guy needs the business but no one ever turned down some good publicity?

I would be keen to see how you get on turtle, I'm trying to decide if ki stick with standard 2k paint or go to a beeline type product, it's a pretty straight 80 so not sure if I go the Mongrel offroad look or fresh and clean, my quad bike does most of the rough stuff for me now

Very few occasions when you'll need special 'tuff' coatings for 4x4 work. In umpteen years of Canterbury 4wd club trips for me (400-500 tracks) our club covered some real truck busters at times - Slabhut Creek, the Stamper, Moa Bones, Reefton area, coast-to-coast tracks, Mt Greenland etc - all in their heyday. But I never needed to repaint one panel on my 3 trucks, and most clubbies did not need to. One small dent.

The boys often polish trucks well before trip so branches slip across paint, and drive cautiously past/through plant/scrub/matagouri etc. Alot comes down to how you drive. I remember visiting another chch club and they loved talking about truck damage - seemed to take pride in it - but we did the same tracks and looked after trucks through the same challenges. Any 4x4 vets reading this know what I'm talking about.

Paint matters. Darker colours like my dark blue and wine red trucks show scratches easier because of their white/grey undercoat, whereas white trucks show scratches much less - as do gray paint trucks. Its easy to get into situations where you can scratch them up - a track overgrown since last trip, or new and different approach angles through an obstacle etc. But usually you can find a way to look after paint - and truck mechanicals. You can go on a club trip - have seen it so many times - where some get through without problems, but other guys smack the shite out of their vehicles. How you drive.

If scratches inevitable in your terrain, its likely cheaper to repaint 2-4 panels (about $200 per panel) every few years than spend 3-4k on a special coating. And hunting trips (for most of this site's members) are much much easier than club offroading on the vehicles. Hunting we may pass through occasional tricky terrain or a deeper river, but with club offroading you're often looking for the toughest possible challenges for our highly modified trucks. Done both for 50+ years and club 4x4ing much harder on vehicles.

Special 'tuff' coating could be the deal for a dedicated offroad 4x4, but no necessity for hunting 4x4s. Pick your colour, do the polishing, have a good light cut and polish compound for post trip tidy up
(eg Pacer), then pick your own approach into and through obstacles eg heavy growth. As mentioned above any 4x4 club veterans here will know exactly what I'm talking about. After first few club years when you throw your vehicles into everything, you learn to navigate obstacles to protect both paint and truck mechanicals. Can be done.

a good friend of mine back in my teens had a fairly decent paint job on his lada niva
home exterior paint done with a roller

Heck, Chuck on a coat of blackboard paint and give the kids some chalk.

So im meeting with one of the reps for Roberto Robliner on Thursday at the paint shop, booked in for rust and primer coats as well as a test paint for next week and then a week later in for the the hole lot to be done. Will get some photos of the work before and after

so went with the Robliner, good suggestion @cambo just picked up the truck today after having the rust issues addressed and the "test" paint done, i think that was more so for the spray painters who honestly thought i was mad even suggesting the idea!

very happy with the rust work, Will has done a really good job as far as i can tell! the paint work looks good too, well i think it does and im the one paying

here are a couple of shots contrasting the state of the paintwork and the new colour, also realise its in the shade and its a little dreary here in chch, the roof rack, bull bars and rear bumper will be black

that was exactly my response when a mate questioned me about it, i said that as it was shaped like a brick that the dimple effect would neutralise drag

Easier to grip and push when STUCK .

So picked it up today, overall im happy with the paint job, a few little issues that need to be sorted but here is the end result





Cost wise, well more than i had initially budgeted, however i balance that out with all the windows came out and all the metal was checked for rust, where there was rust it was removed. the paint wasn't a stock standard paint, they took nearly everything off the body to paint

the team was good to deal with however realistically its a three week job for them

the paint will take a little to 100% cure but its certainly different!

Im spending the rest of the day cleaning inside the truck!
