If you are after something for heavier off road use then I'd go old school. They are built more for the purpose and you won't need to be so worried about it. Get something shiny for the road. If it is something they can offer you low profiles for it at the dealership then leave it at the dealership.

I think its pretty hard to beat the Landcruiser 70 series. We've had a few Landcruisers on the farms over the years, and all have done well in excess of 300,000 with no major problems. We run tractor tyres on them year round and they get flogged. Anything that can survive a few years on a ex native cleared stump filled coastal property that gets the better part 2000mls of rain per year has my vote.

No longer have red girl, she was replaced by a 100 series and ended up as a spray rig in Canterbury, but still have the FJ40. Dad bought it about 20 years ago for about 7k at a clearing sale. Hoped it would last 4 or 5 years, but it hasn't died yet! Has a 3b in it and runs great. Has been rolled twice, and it recently got treated to a new cab and all of the rust cut out. A few snapped springs, flogged brakes, broken driveshaft's and a smashed front diff are the only serious things that have gone wrong with it (tractor grips (and teenage boys) are hard on gear) Still starts on the coldest morning after an 8 second glow.

As you can see, our farm "tracks" get a bit challenging in the winter time

Iv got a 2 dr, 1.6 manual, Suzuki vitara 2001 with yokohama geolanders on as a farm/hunting/runabout and I can thoroughly recommend them, they can leave your big heavy hiluxs etc for dead as far as mud and hillclimbing. Could be for sale soon.
