Dual purpose bikes are awesome. I've had a DRZ250, DR650, KLR650 and my old man has a DL650 which I've ridden a few times.
Especially living in Cromwell there will be gravel roads and adventure rides galore!

Hardest thing would be to decided what end of the spectrum to go for, I personally liked the DR650 as having done a lot of offroad riding enjoyed being able to stray from the gravel,
But a DL650/1000, GS800/1200 etc will be heaps more comfortable and more power, especially if you were used to the power of a ZX1400.
    I'd recommend either a BMW GS800 or a road legal KTM exc300.

Yeah the Enfeilds are pretty retro , nice bit of marketing...

Rode a MT09, another 40 hp and it would have been better.

    Speed Triple might be ok.
MT09 but with more power Isnt that called a V Max??????

Or if power is your thing, Triumph Rocket III???

If bigger (but not necessarily faster) then Boss Hoss might fit the bill but it probably wont fit the budget. 8 litre engine on a bike anyone???

I hear what your saying and it's very sensible but doesn't work that way for me, at 50 + yrs I have no desire to become too sedate, I have been riding since i was 15yrs old and bikes are in the blood.
It's more about having a toy that puts a smile on my dial and blows out the cobwebs. Riding a bike for me is just the coolest thing, wind, noise, acceleration and something that responds to your input and not just putting it in "D" pressing the pedal and turning a steering wheel.
Tourists are the biggest danger down here, the driving antics are shocking.

    +10 points

Oldest riding members in our Ulysses Club are 85 (all they'll admit to).
One loves resurrecting/riding Classic Pommy bikes, the other rides a DL650 - gravel roads/farm tracks - wherever the road takes him.
I rode dirtbikes for a whole - after two trips to A&E - L3/4 and T4/5 vertebrae crushed - went back to road bikes.
When you ride, you're part of the experience, not a 'watcher' - majority of drivers do even that part BADLY.

The obvious solution is to buy more than one.
Especially living in Cromwell, you need one dedicated to highlands use

Yeah I know but I thought I would put the tread up as it's a good excuse to talk bikes and I know other forum members ride.
With over 30yrs riding I know a lot about bikes and have owned plenty, always good and fun to hear others opinions.

How far away from home do you want to go with the pillion? If it's a day trip and she's not too old then the triumph with a nice seat will be fine and tick the boxes. Might be able to get the suspension modified for your weight too depending on budget etc.

I am planning on getting a triumph when I finish my apprenticeship

I still have the bike I bought over 25 years ago and I still ride it to work. But I also own an MX5. It is not a toy. I bought it to "commute" from Chch to Blenheim on weekends when my pa was real crook. Safer at night and a bit more comfort / luggage. I also did not want to thrash my wee vitara doing that trip either...Now I am addicted to both and sometimes (only sometimes) I have trouble choosing between the two. They are both incredible fun and the MX5 is a very under rated car for sporting or cruising...

Well if you have any interest in a Yahama v-star 1100 classic in red, 06, with 550 km on it,(yes you read that right)
I've just got it inspected and plated, I bought it new in Alberta, and my little bro was killed on one, Family found out, to keep the peace I parked it, and it's kinda been sitting around for years, while I rode dual perpose dirt bike instead,
I will put a photo up tommorow, if anyone is interested.
new battery and carb overhaul, last week, might have a few more clicks, on it by end of week.
