had a bloody good run out of the Hilux surf's (5) keep your coolant up to scratch, the older Prado are bomb proof and certainly have the boogy to tow and cruise. Only issue for you would be trying to put anything on the roof racks as they are so high. I struggle a bit to get my Sup boards or kayak up there.

Not many people seem to mention Holden Rodeos in their recommendations. Sure they aren't the fastest 4x4 in the world and they sound like a tractor but they are reasonably cheap in comparison to the fords and toyotas and they are damn reliable. I have an 03 which is the 3.0 TD model, the one before the RA model and I can't fault it. At times when doing a bit of 4wding it can be a little under powered but that's not really a major. My brother has a 2000 model that is a 2.8l TD. He is not known to be kind to vehicles and that thing has never let him down. They are simple, solid and reliable in my experience.

outside of the box, be very aware of "good" deals second hand coming out of ChCh right now. 4x4's are getting pinched almost daily at the moment in the greater christchurch areas.
