    Check your speedos.

I'm confused, a few weeks ago, the powers that be, decided that there would be no speed leniency tolerated. One kilometer over the limit and you're done for. Now I read that the death toll, up to today is eight dead and is double of that last year. What pray tell, was the draconian law rushed in for? Couldn't be revenue raising, egotistic want or just plain stupidity...could it?

I'll plumb for all of the above

But seriously, I'm camped a couple of K off SH1 hunting, and bugger me the road is solid cars, 20m between, for the last week. Bejeezus there's some traffic out there. And through the binos, theres a lot of exhaust pipe inspectors out there

Still been setting cruse control at 105 km on highways, nothing in the mail yet. No tolerance means speedo watchers instead of being aware of what's going on around you.

Ahem, I for one am quite happy with the ‘contents’ of my speedos!

Most speedometers read 5 or so km faster than the cars true speed...

Yep that. Lowering speed limits will only worsen the problem.

I know that the "speedo Watchers" are going to be severely disappointed as I have never been able to get more than about 2 kmph out of mine.............even with the discount.

I now set my speed limiter function to 105kph on open road long trips. You wont go over unless you plant your foot I believe or sometimes when going downhill foot off throttle and then it gives an audible warning.

Often you don't realize how fast your going especially on long straights, then you glance down and realize you're doing 120kph or something. Ooops.

Yep, most car Speedo’s read 5 and some even 10% high. I think I read somewhere that it came about through litigation avoidance in countries where the manufacturer could be sued for speed related fines, so they built in a margin.

I put a VDO programmable speedo in my old Landy and replaced the mechanical cable with a Hall effect sensor off a later model. On the VDO, I set the pulses per km to 10% higher than actual to slowly claw back my RUC costs... At 100k’s indicated, it was bang on 110.

10MRT shooters do it 60 times, in two directions and at two speeds.

Well today I had Mr Plod do a U turn in front of me across 2 passing lanes and Double Yellows in the middle (on the Gentle Annie) to intercept a van coming the other way
I wonder who was more unsafe................bearing in mind the speed limit here used to be 100km until the week before Xmas when it dropped permently to 80

Yeah, seems they can do what they like on the road. Who's going to pull them up?
