In seriousness, what are the disadvantages (weight equal) in having more HP off the back ? If run at half stick all the time, does it degrade the motor over time, or do they use more fuel? Disregard purchase price.

I would say over powered my 620 HT had a 150 E Tec on it and that had heaps of power for 4 divers and and all the gear and crossing west cost bars.
The 580HT is quite a bit smaller I had a 115 Yamaha 4 stroke on my 560 and although it didn't have the instint get up like the E Tec I still had plenty of power.

If the same weight then probably the same cc/same engine so no disadvantage other than price.
In the case of the boat above I imagine it will use more fuel than say a 130 driven at its most economical speed but the bigger engine should cruise faster more economically than the smaller engine at the same faster cruise.

Under powered has many disadvantages tho, slow, dangerous in some conditions, excessive fuel use, over stressing the engine causing short life/possible catastrophic failure.

I think in the 6 years I had my 620 I only ever got to run at full throttle once at sea the rest of the time on our cost was no more than half so still plenty of power left if needed.
Pontoon boats do need more power to push them but a 150 on a 620 Ali is plenty.

With the secondhand boat market/trademe kicking through some exceptional boats it would be pretty hard to justify going new.
Second hand whitepointer or AMF's can be had for the new price of a surtees. I'd be going second hand.

Have a look at the Aqualite they are not as common as a lot of other boats but well finished and stable
I've had an older 4.6 for about 10 years now great little boat to fish from little bit underpowered with the 50 merc but it has towed a 560 senator home

Boat gets along ok but is working. Boat and motor are both 1996 merc is one of the last before the bigfoot does about 4500 rev 18knots has a 13 degree pitch prop
It did have a 19degree prop on it at one time but that killed it
    What would you recommend ?
