Thread: Fuel useage

I've been travelling around nz the last week. I noticed everytime I filled up with NPD diesel (3 times) my fuel usage was alot higher then other diesels. Driving was very similar (open road) also noticed the ute seemed more sluggish.

So I did some non scientific comparisons
19 litres of NPD got me 155km
15 Litres of BP diesel got me 210km

Those distances were just the range between petrol stations, but food for thought. Has anyone else found NPD diesel to be lesser quality? Or is it just my dmax doesn't like it?

Wonder if one place is running 'winter' diesel and the other not. Not 100% sure what the difference is bit something to do with temperature and freezing fuel in the cold

NPD is Allied Petroleum. My 2016 Ranger averages 10.9L/100kms on that juice, I have a heavy foot .

Have you tried others to see if they are more efficient?

Nup, company NPD fuel card. So I don't really have anything to gripe about, however this topic is interesting.

Do we have anything other than winter diesel in NZ? I recall years back giving the father-in-law a hand doing some fencing on his farm in NE NSW and he still had summer diesel in the tractor in mid winter. Early start in the morning, could not get the tractor to start. Eventually pulled the fuel lines off and found ice in the diesel. There was frost all over the ground but I had never encountered ice in fuel lines before. It was a short term problem as the air temperature was 25C by 10am.

Diesel can have different octane levels like petrol's 91 and 95 that is why jap inport cars utes need a bit of tweck on the pump to make them go better. Computers stopped that.

Allied is actually the second tier distributor for mobil. Their tankers refill a lot of mobil stations as well as their own fuel stops so the fuel should be the same.
I don't know who NPD are aligned with but if Marsden point closes it will most probably all come out of Singapore.
I have a bt50 flat deck (poor man's ranger) and get 10.6 sometimes less but brand doesn't seem to matter.

So when I go fill up my bowser and decant into the big farm tank I should do it in mid winter(now)??
Gull Atiamuri is half an hour away, and have 24hr specials every month or so. Last week it was down at $1.23 /L, when Taupo Caltex have the gall to be selling it $1.58

Meh Taupo is rookie numbers….should try Te Awamutu at $1.69…..

Gull send out a text when they do a daily special of 10 or 12 cents off - both sites over my way are card payment only
