1uz has been done heaps of times, mounts etc are easy to get
gearbox will become the weak link
1kzs work really well in the 106 but petrol will get the pricks off ya back with RUC

did a 1uz in a hilux and was cheaper than getting another 5L

the new common rail diesel (1kd) from the sheep shagger would be the best option. if you want more power chip it.

the old girls are far lighter than the new ones so it will go far better. It will not handle near as well so tell him to take it easy, they like to squash roofs
if he is short on money the 1kz isnt a bad motor and you can pick one up in a surf for cheap as chips

the duramax would be my pick tho, if you didnt have a limit on funds

For straight out reliability I would be going with a GM LS1 / LS2 or Toyota 1uz / 2uz. It is a very easy swap to do, these motors are cheap for what they are, easy to work on, parts from the states/japan are readily available and cheap and its hard to beat a v8

I wouldn't be putting a common rail in it (temperamental shits and too expensive if things go wrong) and unless he's doing biiig kms the benefits of a older modelled diesel motor just aren't there any more.
I'm drawn to the mountains and the bush, it's where life is clear, where the world makes the most sense.
