    Infuriating

Called in at Broncos in central Tauranga. Was walking back to the car and looking up the road and could see there was something odd happening with a red SUV and a big jacked up Nissan Patrol. Some guy jumps out of the passenger side of the Nisson and is yelling through the window of the SUV. Then he jumps back in to the Nissan which reverses sharply… straight into the side of our new to us Corolla. Nissan pulls a 180° turn using the pavement on the other side of the road and takes off.

I go to the red SUV driver and it’s an elderly couple who are very flustered. He was trying to reverse into the only free parking space and the Nissan tried to pinch it, though from where the SUV was in the road (too far down) the Nissan driver might not have realized he was going to reverse all that way. So argument ensues.

As I’m talking to the couple I see they have a dash cam and a rear view camera, I ask if they are on and recording. Oh yes, says old mate, we’ll definitely have the footage, he’s certainly up for that. Whereupon his wife brutally interrupts and tells hubby to drive off immediately. And closes the window. They then have an argument in the car while I’m standing there outside wondering what the actual fuck. And to my dismay they drive off.

Minor damage, cosmetic only, but requires panel & paint to fix. If I do fix it I will lose the excess and pay a third more in the loss of no claims bonus. It will probably be a cash job. It’s certainly a very annoying job. People are such idiots far too much of the time.

Chalk that one up to the Tauranga City Council's lack of care in how they've managed to turn the CBD into a black hole of stress and frustration. It just means experiences like yours are almost the norm... The place is just a diabolical clusterfluck and that's the charitable assessment.

When I saw the thread title and read Bronco's, central Tauranga my first thought was it would be similar to my recent experience - had to go into the CDB to pick up my daughter (who's on the spectrum) from a school event at Bay Court theater. With what the Council has done there is a severe lack of parking and no 'loading zone' or 'pick up/drop off' near the theater. So we parked away and my wife walked in to fetch the daughter - a slight delay and it was 15 minutes. I stayed with the car, could move it if required, free spaces all around etc etc but no - $40 ticket for 14 mins parking without paying.

So, sorry any business in the CBD of Tauranga (it's not you) but due to the council's fuc*ery I have added my name to the list of Tauranga people who now refuse to do anything with the CBD. Once the council has completely killed it then will they be forced to admit they fuc*ed up and only then will they learn from their stupidity. In the meantime, any businesses left in the CBD that rely on customers I would like to think would show support for the population of Tauranga in the effort to forcefully educate the Council's employees and take the opportunity to relocate out of the CBD...

I dislike Tauranga in general and very rarely go there these days - it takes me less time to get to Hamilton from our place despite Hamilton being an additional 25 km. And Hamilton is 100% easier in all regards (e.g. no SH2).

But whatever the problems in the Tauranga CBD, this is simply down to people being stupid.

My mileage has been quite different this year because of work activities much closer to home and several related trips to places I don’t normally go (e.g. Auckland). But I don’t drive that much atm, certainly compared to previous years, i’ve only done 3000 km on my Hilux this year, hardly used it. But more and more I am seeing really stupid shit, and I have a great sense of foreboding. I know that sounds dramatic but honestly the amount of near misses through sheer fuckwittery that I’ve seen this year is seriously alarming. I do worry about road safety for my family especially now that we have two young teenage drivers.

this was just a minor incident in the greater scheme of things but completely avoidable in every respect. Just people being fuckwits. The insurance company has told me that all I needed was a plate number for that Nissan and there would’ve been a reasonable likelihood they would have not penalized me as the claimant. The dash cam footage would’ve been a no-brainer. But I didn’t even get the chance to ask for the number plate, old lady was so freaked out she just had a meltdown. Just a shit situation caused by shit behavior by shitty people.

    That's a bastard - and completely unnecessary.

Courtesy is the lubricant of civilised society - and it's free. It's a shame it's so rare.

It sounds like the old man wanted to help but the old woman was scared of reprisal from the run in with the occupant of the Nissan Patrol. You may yet be able to track down the old fellah and appeal to his sense of right doing.

Did you check if Broncos had any street facing cameras? Not sure how far down from the shop you parked tho.

Also, the Tauranga City Council have a heap of street cameras, so if you can recall the date and time, you may be able to request they look at the footage and supply the plate for you?

Yes that is exactly what it was, she was scared witless.

I was just about to suggest that - one thing TCC has done is parked cameras everywhere in the CBD. Colloquially known as 'hobocam' - pretty much there to record the poor bloody street sleepers is the joke.

But if you approach TCC or the Police they may be able to supply the footage as technically it is a 'hit and run' incident with a side order of 'road rage'...

I'm like you though, I've seen how the driving has deteriorated around here and literally every second trip out I'm either nearly getting wiped out or having to take some sort of evasive action because someone has done something wrong or just plain ignorant. I used to get pissy with the cops pulling over every second car on the semi-rural road I am on but I've actually had a bit of a rethink on my attitude to their work. It's likely going to potentially save me (or one of my family) from what the idiot that got pulled over was doing, and if they actually pick up on the learning it will likely save someone else. I had a lady drive out right in front of me at the SH29 roundabout a few days back, I was crossing the main highway straight through and she just didn't stop on the give way - looked me in the eye and drove right in front of me and looked all offended when I kept going. How rude of me as the right of way vehicle, I mean seriously couldn't I tell she was on important errands! FFS. I won't mention the clown that passed me in a stationary line of traffic on the left - or would have if he didn't have to do an emergency stop due to the traffic island in front of him. And sat there beside me looking daggers at me for not letting him in - I would have had to reverse to do that though. And it's only Tuesday (I never went out driving yesterday)!

I was parked quite far away from Broncos.

The Tauranga City Council have got an email from me requesting any CCTV footage from that street at that time. We’ll see if I get anything other than the default response I’ve already had.

I’ve also done a request to the Transport Agency requesting some way of contacting the couple in the SUV to ask very nicely if I can get the dash cam footage.

Over and above these two actions I’m probably not going to bother doing anything else as it just winds me up. And also as my wife said it might be a good time to consider The Law of Unintended Consequences. I have no idea who those guys in the Nissan were but even from a good distance away it would be easy to use what I saw to form a stereotype image in my mind. I’m not going to get into that obviously but there is always the chance that those guys are the kind of fellas that I don’t really want to have anything to do with. I strongly suspect that’s why the old lady was so scared.

Fair call. Sounds like your across it all. Agree if the Nissan driver was the type I assume you are meaning, then the likelihood is you won't want to interact with them. Just shitty for you to wear the cost on top of the inconvenience and frustration. Bloody shame that people have to act like cocks when being polite costs nothing.

Unfortunately I can only see it getting worse as the generation coming through probably have a growing minority of attitudes of knowing their 'rights' and facing little consequences. It's moving on from young and dumb to an element with a nastier streak. Like that video on the news a while back where that ute was reversed into the police car and nearly taking out an officer.

I'm finding people with new cars are doing more dumb stuff in the expectation that all the gizmo's will keep them safe rather than them drive properly
