Interesting for Safari/Patrol owners, Cardan shaft brake warning.

    https://www.sunlive.co.nz/news/29878...rk-brakes.html

I never used to let them do a roller brake check on my Safari's at VTNZ, on the basis that they can if they replace anything they rooted by doing a roller brake test. I never had a VTNZ staffer do a roller brake check on mine after I mentioned that, they tend to do it on the roller because it's there and at that point of the list and they don't have to go back to the list by driving over to a correct grade slope and making sure the park brake holds the thing stationary. I've seen the remains of one driveshaft rear uni that was exploded leaving the vehicle without a park brake - the article does raise a fair point especially for trucks but going to a roller brake machine check on everything could result in a few more issues for the smaller units like the Nissans. Not sure is any other small 4x4's or utes use the Cardan system?

I never used to use it as a drag brake when 4x4-ing like you can do with wheel park brakes, would there be any other time that you'd use a park brake that might cause issues with a cardan?

Bit like modern owner manuals say dont drink the battery contents . All landrovers are cardon shaft hand brakes and the old rule was , if in dought leave in 4wd and in gear .

Land Cruisers also have a handbrake that doesn't respond well to being left on and driven either forward or reverse.
Hence note on speedo that says "HANDBRAKE".
    You need to tell them.

My Land Rover cardon shaft handbrake hasn't worked for the last 10 years. I know this, and no one else drives my land rover. It will hold on a 35 degree slope on the engine alone in 1st gear low ratio. Having said this, the engine is on the large side (6.5 litres)

(edit. is generally operating on the farm only)

Just remembered, all the Army's Pinzgauers have cardon shaft hand brakes. They are a high maintenance item.... cause they are easy to drive off whilst still engaged and can become completely rooted in short order

But does a landcruiser handbrake actually make a difference.... The ones I've used don't!!

You need them "working" for a WOF.
In gear on a slope with engine stopped suffices and is what you should do anyway.
Just needs to hold enough to chuck a trailer on starting and stopping is a pain.
