The ZD30 has a few other issues too, like fuel pumps being a $5k+ engine-out job to replace or recondition (and commonly wearing out around 160-180k).

A mate who is a very good mechanic said from what he had learned of them a lot of the melted pistons etc could be traced back to a dodgy earth on the MAF sensor causing them to overfuel, he recommended anyone who owns one check and rewire that as preventative maintenance.
