The diesel cycle is more efficient (greater compression ratio) and so you tend to use less fuel than you would with a petrol. On top of this the fuel price is lower, though the ratio of prices has changed over the last 20 years when diesel was just under half the price of petrol where now it is about three quarters the price. I managed 9.5l/100km with the Bighorn the other weekend on a trip to Dunedin and back which isn't too bad. The big Mercedes Sprinter surprised me with 8.8l/100km. Personally I prefer the way a diesel drives with its low end torque.

There is also more potential energy in a liter of diesel than petrol.
Apples with apple's the diesel will always use less.
Weather it works out cheaper or not is up for debate

And this right here is the issue with these discussions
My 747 avgas can get me to London on a single tank!!! Yet my 20 year old diesel only gets me to wellington and back.

The real answer to which fuel to use is what goes in the fuel tank on the farm?

Never seen a 747 run on AvGas yet but the old fuckers burn about 200 tons of AvTur to London via LAX, it's a dirty industry.

Yep you have to rate the 100 series, the biggest problem now with them is they still seam to be the same price as they were 8+ years ago, all that Toyota stuff just seems to get to a price point and the price never moves again.

Not trolling and genuinely interested in your logic, please explain....

I ask as a 80 Series owner, and just saw a 100 Series somewhere, one owner, Diesel, supposedly 49,000 genuine k's, dealer asking $62,000 from memory, FFS !!!
