    I USED TO THINK this way too Barry...but not any more..we bought a 2.7 terrano with an auto in it...and no way would I go back to manual...there is only ONE thing better about a manual than an auto...you can tow start it.

    Hahaha sorry team, I really only posted that for a reaction. But I do like my old diesel manual disco. And to those who say they break down all the time, that's just rubbish. I know plenty of toyotas that break down all the time. Comes down to two main factors - the previous owners, and the current owners. Ain't much to do with the brand of car, within reason.
    Anyway, sometimes it's worth driving a LR just for the haters, y'no
    Truth be told, I wanted an old hilux. one with a solid front axle. But when I realized I could get a LR with way better specs and for half the price, that's what I chose. I don't regret it

    I owned a landrover once, never again, been hilux ever since, had a few crumpy ones, bloody good in the mud but put a trailer on and sad stories.
    D4d 4wd xtra cab at the moment.

    Toyota has a good brand, if you want one pay the price otherwise buy a Mahindra. There's plenty of choice out there, it's only this fcuked up Govt and Green Party that are adding extra tax/cost on them.
    That Toyota that Tahr posted is one mean looking machine, if I wasn't driving my daily Landcruiser I'd swoop on that and be happy paying the Green tax.

    Fark no, just no. Auto boxes for towing with the modern electrically selected 4wd systems that you can't put into L4 with the front hubs disengaged are just arse. As soon as you try and reverse a heavy trailer up and around a corner (especially starting off in that condition) you're almost duty bound to have it stall on you. The VW's with the 10-speed box were the absolute worst for this, so high geared in reverse.

    At least with a clutch you have the option of punishing the poor little grabby thing to get the job done, but the problem here is the modern dual mass flywheels really take to that sort of treatment. Mechanics friends, those things. This is the issue with modern gear, the older auto's were garbage for shifting and performance but usually had a half decent reverse ratio. The older manuals were fitted with tougher clutches and flywheels, and usually came with manual freehubs which gave the option of L4 tractor mode (as long as you were gentle with the axles). Compounding the problem, the older utes were usually running a 2500kg tow rating vs 3500Kg on the newer options.

    Guess it depends on what type are car you are talking about and how much horsepower you have?
    I cant reverse a trailer up an asphalt drive in my Silverado in L4 because it will rip the Asphalt off on a turn,but I dont need to use low on tarmac anyhow.

    My son n law has a 2.8 hilux 8 speed.Its smooth,fast and has 160kw of towing power.Makes my old patrol look vintage in technology.I want a 400hp Nissen Patrol 5.6 litre.Bugger the greenies.
