I will definitely take your opinion unquestionably now!

20 years of reliable motoring must be all in my head

By the way, I don’t disagree that the current VWs do have their reliability issues especially regarding electrics, but to make an unqualified statement on an open forum that the original hot hatch that started the hot hatch genre and ruled it pretty much the the entire time is just trolling.

No need to reply, We realise what we are dealing with

Don't confuse good with well marketed, and as far as sales stats go you could include other alliances together. But there is so much part supply all over the show it is like shovelling liquid jelly with a pitch fork to try and work out the true numbers over the years. Fords with Renault motors, Nissans sold as Fords, Holdens (GM) with Nissan engines, .... Isuzus sold as Hondas and Vauxhals and Opels.
No need to "fix" what isn't broken.

Personally, I like what they did. Think only got dropped in it by a disgruntled ex-employee. Other than that no one was any the wiser which indicates how useful the stuff was in the first place.

Why on the first day God created Holden and then.............................................. ...... made Mazda BT50's for people he wanted to torture...........................the end

And for those especially naughty / nasty people he created "European vehicles" which are a special kind of hell all their own

Its fairly well known among petrolheads that many car manufacturers (especially the European ones) have been gaming the standard emissions and fuel economy tests for years, optimising engine mapping etc to recognise the test cycle and give a much better test result than owners will ever be likely to achieve on the road. VW just took it a step too far, crossed some blurry line from bending the rules to breaking them, and got caught.

The Japanese manufacturers don't seem to game the tests the same for whatever reason (maybe they're just more honest), their official figures usually seem much closer to what people see in the real world. I saw an interesting comparison between official test figures and real-world (collated from a bunch of owners) for the VW Golf R and Impreza STI (which have similar power and weight etc). From memory the Golf claimed about 40mpg average and did 27, the Subaru claimed 28 and did 26.

Has one about 5 years ago. The finish was terrible. Made in Spain and IIRC they are now making the Merc utes so I hope they’ve improved in this department. Was a disappointment.
The range of what we think and do is limited by what we fail to notice. And because we fail to notice that we fail to notice, there is little we can do to change; until we notice how failing to notice shapes our thoughts and deeds
