Manuals nowadays are not the same as old, mostly due to the dual mass flywheels. Possibly the only benefit to a manual is control of the gear selection, but then most drivers these days can't drive a manual at all and most company buyers are refusing manuals for that reason. Demand = supply...

Hmmm,so the 2/IC head sherang of Aussie Toyota sales in a media launch says " off the record,I may be wrong about this but....." well they could of got an equally qualified statement from the Toyota cafeteria tea lady.

There are quite a few Engineers around the world saying that hot V's are not a recipe for engine longevity, no matter what the displacement.

Sure was nice to tear around in for two weeks though, haha.

While it can and often is said there is no replacement for displacement and I do agree with that statement displacement in itself has nothing to do with longevity.
It is entirely possible to design a 2.8l diesel to produce 80%of 500nm (most marine/stationary engines are rated at 80% max output 100%dutycycle) to last 500,000km or a million km if you like but it's efficiency will be worse and emissions will be worse with its bigger bearing surfaces, thicker rings, heavier pistons stronger block and head etc.
At the end of the day manufactures no longer want to produce an engine or vehicle that will last 30 or 40 years.
What meets the market and the Regulations is fuel efficient low emissions vehicles which is why we have the smaller more efficient engines with low tension rings etc etc
They don't wear out because they are small capacity they wear out because that is their design life.
It wasn't that long ago we we driving Pommy and American shit that made about 6-8 hp out of 2L and needed a valve grind every 30 thou and rings and bearings every 60 and you don't get much more under stressed than that.

If I had cash In hand to buy a new land cruiser tomorrow I would buy the v8.
It can easily be tuned to make 700nm and still last 500,000.....I wouldn't say the same for the hilux motor.

Tho if they wanted to they could build one.

They’ve already built one. The 1GD is already doing that kind of mileage. And it doesn’t need a load more torque to do the job. If you keep an eye on the Aussie car sales like I do - particularly the fleet auctions, mining & industrial, you’d know that its perfectly normal to see early Gen 8 Hilux (2016-17) with 400, 500,000km being sold on. Hell, even TradeMe has them with 300,000km already, in our tiddly little country. There was one on Pickles a few weeks ago in QLD - ex-railways vehicle. 2017 GUN126R, tested, passed for sale with minor cosmetic damage, 550,000km. Up and down the QLD railtracks all day, rough railway roads. The auctions will throw up 5-yr old utes with half a million clicks, one owner - not unusual. Most guys here just don’t see / understand that kinda mileage, but its not unusual in the north of Aus.

Likewise the H300 Hiace. There are mine personnel vans in north WA running the 1GD motor doing >80,000km a year, up in Newman, Tom Price, Parabardoo etc. Four, five year old vans with 350-400,000km. Watch them get snapped up at auction. There are Hino 200s all over SE Asia with a GVM of 4t, working hard… same engine. What mileage do you think the Asian Coaster buses are going to do? Those things drive all day every day. Same engine.

I’m sounding like a stuck record… I think a lot of guys are really missing the point with this debate, simply don’t have the perspective - this is not a new engine. Its a proven, long-lasting engine that’s been used in tough commercial working conditions all over the world for almost 10 years already. Perfect credentials for Toyota to pick it for the Land Cruiser 70 series. Its a no brainer. Its only the Aussies that are whinging, and a few Kiwis, its not an issue anywhere else. Most of the guys complaining will never own one anyway!

The mileage you are talking for Nth Queensland isn't that far ahead of some of the commercial boys locally, 4 year old truck with 350,000 on it and a couple of 24months with almost 200. Some of the HT rigs are running over a million in 6 years locally, so we do see those mileage figures here. 10 years isn't that long in the world of engines though, just as a point of call. The TD42 is a 70's tech engine, now that is proven. I can't think of an application it hasn't been used in - maybe aviation (but then I've seen a ground unit running off one...). The P5AT is now close to 35 years old in the basic design, much tarted up same as the Toyota unit but still there's not a lot ground breaking in it. People class that as a borderline engine prone to mechanical issues, but it's the emissions control gear on it that's creating most of the issues that are giving the engine a rep. Vane type oil pump saving 0.75Kw, DPF, EGR, CCV - sort those and 90%+ failures gone. The main issue that the toyota engine has is due to the same reason as the P5AT - "upgrades" due to emissions control gear and making the thing light to save rotational inertia.

Interestingly, it's the same basic design as the Yanmar 4LV marine engine - have a look at the numbers of those in service. That says something referring back to my earlier comment about marine engine loadings. Bit hard to walk home in that application.

Cummins 6BTA 5.9L 250Hp at 2800 rpm detuned marine, good for 10 or 12,000hrs if you look after them. 2.8L 250Hp at 2800rpm - I know what I'd rather have especially with some of our local conditions. Match the tool to the job though, and it will do the job.

I wasn't saying the hilux motor couldn't do 500k or more my point was it probably wouldn't if tuned to 700nm and run at 80% load....by say towing a 3.5t boat all round the country but the v8 probably would.

Yes that is true, I would always take a manual over an auto but then I don't live in a city where driving requires gear changes every 30 seconds

I happily set my driving style to what suits me in the manual - the "caterpillar crawl" start-stop that automatic drivers do just doesn't suit a manual, but crawling along in 1st or 2nd at 5-15Km/H consistently while everyone bunches up and stops in front of you and everyone behind you starts mashing their teeth works well. The only issue is when you get a gap in front of you opening up 50,000 idiots think they can jam into it at the same time!
