Kids and machinery= bad news however you look at it.

Really feel for that little guys parents,I really dont know how I would cope if it was me who had lost my son.
As parents we all try to look after our young but at the same time let them live and not wrap them in bubble wrap.

Nasty nasty nasty..............feel for the tractor driver too, he must be going threw hell and has plenty to come with osh etc.

TRAGIC ACCIDENT: Four-year-old Uetaha Ransfield-Wanoa was killed after falling under a mower on Tuesday. MOTHER: Ailza Wanoa. FATHER: Willy Ransfiel.

Uetaha Ransfield-Wanoa was just two weeks from turning five and starting school.

The boy was killed in a horrific accident when he went under a tractor-towed mower at Kirkpatrick Park, in Hastings, on Tuesday.

A family spokesman said Uetaha's parents, Ailza Wanoa and Willy Ransfield, wanted time to come to terms with their loss.

Yesterday, a small bunch of flowers lay at the site of Uetaha's death, in the centre of the park.

Two cousins visiting the site, Dale Halbert and Alex Thompson, said the family were devastated and looked forward to receiving Uetaha's body late yesterday after an autopsy had been carried out in Palmerston North.

They said Uetaha's eight-year-old uncle Teatua, who had witnessed the accident, had been the hardest hit. "It's pretty heartbreaking . . . I feel so sorry for him," Halbert said.

"It was Teatua who ran to tell the family what happened."

Halbert, who lives in Brisbane, was flying home today.

"I have two young boys, a three-year-old and a six-year-old. I can't wait to see them, especially after something like this," he said.

They said the date and location for a tangi had yet to be discussed.

Family members have expressed their grief on Facebook.

Uetaha's grandfather, Duncan Ransfield, said he was devastated by the death.

His uncle, Dallas Halbert, urged friends to "embrace your children and love them to the moon and back".

Sergeant Ray Kirkby said police were investigating and had spoken to five adults who had witnessed the incident, which occurred at about 5pm.

Kirkby said the tractor driver had been interviewed after the accident but had been in a very distressed state and would need to be interviewed again.

The park belonged to Hastings District Council and the tractor and mower were council-owned and driven by a council employee.

Mayor Lawrence Yule said the employee, who had worked for the council for 13 years and held a senior role, was "traumatised".

"He is highly emotional, as you can expect, as are the rest of the team.

What's a four year old doing in a public park without adult supervision?

I bubble wrap the crap out of my only kid (3&1/2yr old girl). I wouldn't let let Her out of my sight for a second. Not for anything. I was raised the exact opposite and i'm amazed i survived the hundreds of ways I could have killed myself (or those around me) due to the complete lack of supervision (parents of the 70's I'm talking about you lazy sods lol). I'll confess a few - running from trains ("Stand by me" style, climbing 50m vertical cliffs without ropes, making bombs, almost used a kite for a hang glider. I could go on for ages. Like I said - its a miracle nobody from my street wasn't killed. We all did dumb shit 'cause our parents didn't care. Bow and arrow fights, surfing in lightning storms. Stealing golf balls then selling them to other golfers... The list is endless

That sounds like my upbringing dead is better. My parents cared though, but we were rural and old school and alot more laid back then. Alot of the stuff i got up to as a kid would have me taken off my parents and shoved into care in this day and age. I reckon a little danger is nesecary when growing up, makes you better prepared for life than the cotton wool raised pussies that are currently being bred.

Sounds like you had a fairly normal childhood to me DiB and you survived it like most of the rest of us did.

Now the worker has been charged,I feel sorry for the poor bugger he has to live with it, now he is going to get dragged through the courts.

I have to say I find myself agreeing with you on that Dundee. But, until the full story is told, I will reserve my judgement.

I can't see how they could charge the driver, he had already told them to stay away by the sounds of it, poor guy, it would definitely traumatize you!

Unfortunately in this day and is age of health and safety there is no such thing as an accident and the blame has to be put on someone.
Almost without exception its put on the wrong person.

Sadly you are right VC. I feel for all involved.

The driver had identified the hazard and attempted to minimise the risk by asking the kids to stop, the kids stayed and the driver continued with the hazard still present with the tragic outcome.

The driver is at fault. (As fucked up as it is)

I agree with you Kokako it is seriously fucked up. The authorities will hold the view that the driver could have eliminated the risk by stopping the activity.
