My 2017 d-max 6 speed manual with 44kms tows our caravan or boat effortlessly. Off to Sth Island for 6 weeks very shortly, but will have extra service done prior. No issues at all so far.

@hamsav I have an 80series LandCruiser I do the serving and maintenance as well as the triton. The 2018 triton I can do 8-10hours driving for the day, turn around and come back the next day, same trip in the LandCruiser would require at least a few hours in a bath, quantities of medicinal alcohol and a few trips to the chiropractor, big difference in 20 years of technology in the comfort and sound quietening.
The high service cost is to partly offset warranty claims cost, future/current work of the dealer, yours and/or other customers pooled together...basically a part prepaid scheme.
Guy in Fairlie had a new ford ranger about 18 month.Came back from Timaru one day, parked beside his house.Went inside to see his familly, was there only about 5 minuts. His mrs could see this smoke out side.WTF the ranger went up in smoke, burnt to the ground very quickly, only done maybe 40ks.FORD didnt want to know about it,see your insurance company.Ranger still had plenty of warranty.Unbelievable, not the 1st time this has happened to ford rangers.Something to do with fuel lines near hexhaust system. It was a buitifull ute, then turned into a hep of rubble.
had one of my customers coming to see me in his 2 year old colorado. was doing 100k an hour on a motorway, no trailer, buggaa ll in the tray. rear diff blew out.
had a drive of it after it was repaired and the gear change was all over the place gating wise.
however we installed an egr killer and it went damn well after that till he got laid off and had to sell it
For those taking the piss, I was meaning my migration driving from bluff to North Canterbury for the winter..... But yeah the 3l outback doesn't get much of a run over on the island since it redlines at 65 in 1st and the limit on the island is 50....
To the op, I figure you will get utes built last thing on a Friday with all brands so go for the one giving you the best deal / the bells and whistles you want. Mine was ex demo with 7km on the clock (bit more than I had hoped but 5k service had been done) towbar, mats seat covers etc (which should all come standard on a vehicle but don't anymore)
At least couple month weight for a hilux.
New ute with the best warranty I suppose...
Hear horror stories about them all.
But considering the number of them on the road these days, there'll always be a mate of a mate with one that has crapped out.
I'm drawn to the mountains and the bush, it's where life is clear, where the world makes the most sense.
Thats a whole nother car, a ½ way decent rifle ,a hellava piss up , all my teeth fixed, my leg amputation reversed, or a bunch of good time girls[/QUOTE]
The way you place relative importance on that descending scale of car/gun/booze/teeth/leg/hookers is a very interesting scale
Me I'd want a leg back first but being knee deep in whores has it's own special appeal

Honda basic farm bike parts and bikes are the same @tetawa. Like a salesman said to me the other day NZers when they want something we want it straight away, well times have now changed and you going to have to accept waiting a couple months now and it could be like this for a while
