    Where to Buy Second 4WD's?

The son of a mate has around $20-$25K burning a hole in his pocket, and is looking for a 4WD ute. I think he has trawled Trademe and Turners, but was asking if there are any other sites/sources that he might have missed? I have no idea really, but said I would ask an informed group ( )

    Anyone got any suggestions?

edit: Title should have read 'Second-hand 4WD's.

Check out Orix's website, I just bought a low milage 2wd Hilux for one of the guys at work. They had a few 4wd models in there, they won't knock off more than a grand from the window price.
For reliability, the guy said Mitsi's are right up there with Hilux's.

It very much depends what you are looking for - the Orix ones are all ex-lease which simply means minimum servicing and any necessary repairs and they've been driven like they were stolen by a lot of people that wouldn't treat them like that if they were a personal vehicle.

They also know what they have and have made their money off the vehicles from the lease and finance arrangements and are recouping the final residual off the asset at sale time, which is why they don't discount and the price is a little lower than other non-commercial dealers.

My advice is open eyes on all the usual selling sources, auctions including Trademe and the smaller sources (that often list on Trademe anyway) and things like local traders and Facebook Marketplace.

With everything second hand, get it plugged in and checked - knowing that everything diesel common rail is now expected to need a set of injectors at 120-150,000Kms and also budget on a full service throughout including all fluids, brakes, filters and a very good check of the telemetry data via the OBDII port. Also, research the vehicle and talk to the mechanic about things like timing chains, some of the Navara's were bad for these crapping themselves for example. Further down the line, I would plan on DPF and EGR/EGR cooler delete mods and a retune to make it run right, but wouldn't recommend anything like a power upgrade on an older engine.

Other advice is make a list up of what he wants it to do, as if you buy a ute with a hard lid and find it sucks balls as everything you try to put in the tray is taller and need to go to a canopy that will likely cost you 1-1.5 grand to source and fit. Or, if you want to cart mountain bikes etc or a dog box then a flat deck might be the better option, also a very easy way to get better departure clearance at the back end.

We have always purchased 2nd hand low milage utes from Orix and have had no issues with them, and our guys drive them like they have stolen them.
A few weeks back I looked up the Orix website and then trolled thru Trademe for hours, next day went around to Orix and bought one on the spot, drove it away later that afternoon, was an ex pilot / over dimension vechicle with all the lighting and what not so figured it wouldn't have been hammered in it's 75,000km life. Bloody good knick to boot.

Yep that's probably a good one in that sort of usage. Mate got one that looked pretty good - gave the first issue with sensors about 4 months in and just had electronic/electrical gremlins ever since. What sorted it in the end was getting run into while it was parked on the side of the road, drunk driver caught it by about 100mm on the right rear corner and turned it into a banana. Absolutely stuffed it... Insurance payout meant that me mate didn't really lose out, and no major tears at the loss of the vehicle to be honest. Not sure why it was so troublesome and had so many issue with electrical stuff, by any other measure it was fine and it wasn't modified in any way.

It's not really the fault of Orix as well though to be honest - but more of the fact that the vehicle was probably used hard and in some form of environment like mining that had a requirement for waterblasting the thing before it left site.

Orix normally does some very good pricing, at least being an ex lease vehicle they have all been serviced as per manufacturers requirements etc...
