Who Knows About Ford Rangers ?

Considering a couple of low km second hand Rangers, and curious to know whether there is anything to be cautious about......the ones in question are 2021 2.0 litre XLT 4WD's. I have some experience with the 3.2 litre models, but keen to understand more about those 2 litre models. Should I keep considering them, or 'avoid like the plague'? Predominant use will transport on be on sealed and unsealed roads ... not load lugging or towing.

    Thanks

If I were you, I’d work out with model and engine codes you’re looking at, and then spend some time looking at the reliability indexes. Not trim codes, the proper codes. The 2.0L bi-turbo is YN2S. The reliability indexes do not lie.

The problem with forums is you get outliers making the most noise, one guy that had a terrible experience can influence the entire discussion.

My 2c worth - the 3.2 five cylinder (SA2W) is far preferred on the major industrial sites in Australia. However, there’s no denying the 2.0 drives nicely on the road with it’s 10-speed auto box (10R80)……………. However………….. It is the complexity of this gearbox that would totally put me off buying one of these vehicles out of warranty.

That’s a clue as to what you need to be researching.

Only know that my 2012 3.2L manual one is probably the last one I'll own simply because I hate auto boxes. By the time I need to change this one hopefully the new future fuel will be out, I'm not convinced electricity in its current form is right.

    Opps.

From what I've seen. I don't think I would touch a Ford. Some people have a great run out of them granted. Some of them seems to be a constant nightmare.

If either of those was mine. Unless my wallet was in the glove box all I would be doing is taking a photo and calling insurance company. It's all yours bro.

I know a mechanic who fixes land Rovers and from a memory of a drunken hazy conversation he said the 2l engine was in land or range Rovers as well and they were problematic ... But not a 100% sure on my recall...

My son has a 2litre Wildtrack with about 70 ks on the clock, just fitting his first new tyres, round town hack. Has had no problems. Total different to my old 3.2 litre with 230 ks on it. drives very nice, plenty of grunt and light steering. Im not a fan of hair dryers for performance on working utes, thats why you need lots of gears, but they tow OK.
Hes waiting for the new one

A mate of mine has run the rangers as work utes for mostly open road technicians. They dont lease them but buy outright.

On 4 of the ranges which were 2018s three of the gearboxes went and got replaced under warranty and a couple reblew.
The other one had injector failure and smooshed the engine. Maybe he got a bad batch who knows, but they were by no means doing hard yards
    just open road driving.

I have the 3.2 version, lots of electrical issues, suspension from new was less than great but aftermarket foam cell and springs sorted that. Currently have an annoying glitch with the valve that modulates fuel pressure to the injectors...

Mate has a 2L, wasn't impressed as a tow vehicle as fuel consumption blew right out. Apart from that it went OK when lightship. Used the other 3.2 fod tow8ng which sorted that... Just the usual glitches apart from that.

Ask any autotrans shop what is the most common Ute they see.
Don't buy a second hand auto 3.2 ranger unless you get good mechanical insurance
