Any recommendations for a hunting knife?

    Hey guys,

Im looking at getting a knife, as the one I have been using is a cheap $20 dollar special from H&F and its pretty much had it.

Not looking to get anything too expensive but still don't want to waste my money on junk.

Any advice would be appreciated, looking to spend between $75-150.

    Cheers

I always carry a Mercator in my pocket. NZ made Svord in the daypack. Mercator does most of the initial work. Svord for skinning and boning out.

    Mercator

    Bahco

    Freezing works knife

    Gerber

My preference is anything thats sharp, the times that i haven't had a knife i use rock chips or sharpen anything to get the gut cavity open

Fortunately i haven't forgotten my knife for a while

All you need is a fencing staple or a broad head Failing that it has been said he once used a round rock to sharpen his fingernail and then dressed a deer with it

Fencing staples and broad heads are in short supply in the Kaweka tops

And I'm not allowed to take a broad with sharp fingernails

So i just have to remember my knife

Curious as to know what the best knife design is for hunting Drop point, Curved or Clip. is there one that can do everything for the hunter or is more knives the better approach, then there is the need for seperate pig sticker as well if you head out after pigs every now and then

I totally agree with Woody about both of those knives. Any knife that can be hammered thru a mild steel bolt & not damage the blade ( Svord's can) get's my vote.Just remember to only sharpen Bryan Baker's knives ( Svord) with a flat stone or a diamond steel. It took me THREE years to read the instructions!!!!! & then the little light in my swede came "on".!!!!!

Gerber folding, like Gibo had or a Bahco but get a thick rubber band to wrap around it & hold it in the sheath.
Shut up, get out & start pushing!

I have lots of knives, and can attest to the fact that to a large extent, you get what you pay for. All knives can perform all jobs, but they are generally designed for a specific purpose therefore more knives are better. For hunting I carry two piggybacked together - a Bark River Fox River and a Bark River Woodsman Special. The two sizes complement each other very well. For boning out I use a NZ made Duel boning knife. The blade shape and wooden handle are just superb for the task.
