Yep looked at that and it is why I started this thread.
I consider the burners, stoves such as the the bakewell to be a lot safer to use than the open fires etc.
Would like DOC to list them and promote their use.
Burning your own wood or standing dead wood in one is arguably better than burning gas.
Cooking, heating with an open fire is pretty inefficient as well.

argueably....your bakewell INSIDE your camper is no different to a DOC supplied enclosed fireplace in a hut...both have an enclosed firebox and a chimney....neither is an open fire as such...so unless fire ban in place as per the above link...no problem here,move along nothing to see.... some nice dry kindling to start it off without smoke and you be good to go....

Be careful with this..not all backcountry areas are under DoC control..think Regional Council areas, private forests...they may have different rules..

A hunter who was "lost" in the North Island lit a fire to attract attention, which burnt out a huge area of pine forest. He was hit with a bill of $270K. He sold his house to come up with the cash for the bill.

All depends on who you deal with and what side of the bed they it up on.... Walked into the freshwater hut to find the fire door open with a few smoldering bits of green wood half in and half out of the firebox with more green manuka (by green I mean they broke of live branchs) stacked on top of the fire to dry out... No one there that's how someone had left it. Nice pile of dry manuka in the wood shed! Doesn't matter what the rules / equipment you have a few idiots will ruin things for the rest of us
