think Sarvo has it..black beech....it washes up around Timaru from time to time as does rata.... grain doesnt look dense enough for maire and it looks to have chipped too easy....depending on where you got it from it could be anything as a lot of wood came of ships in earlier years before MAF got all twitchy about it.

I have burned a smaller piece previously, and it burns hot and slow.

as dos black beech ,maire and most hardwoods....bit of railway sleeper or power pole....both have been repurposed as fence posts too. should be good handle.

Sounds like Maire to me,but I'm not familiar with your area.Someone with local knowledge will have the answer I'm sure

Not Totara anyway; this is the across-grain pattern I was looking for. Quite distinctive:

All done. It’s not perfect, but I’m pretty happy with it as a first time making and hanging an axe handle. Feels great in hand. I thought the heavier handle might throw off the balance, but it hefts really nicely.

Certainly nothing wrong with that.

Yeah, I was doing this - until i started reading about hydrogen embrittlement.
Apparently not the way to go with bladed tools.

Was a fun project, and I learned a ton. If/when this one breaks I will do a better job on the next!

Yeah if I was doing a few of them might be worth a look. Though there is something very satisfying with removing the rust by hand, and seeing this shiny metal emerge!
