    Crampons and Ice Axe

Recommendations on the above that do the job reliably without breaking the bank? Need to equip myself.

    Thanks

My black diamond Raven has actually been used to save me from a fall. Nice and light axe well worth the money

Another vote for Black Diamond Raven.

Make sure you get the correct size.

Word of warning about crampons - get some training. There are some excellent snowcraft courses run by the alpine club. Crampons without training can be a hazard in their own right. You can get pretty far with decent rigid boots and an ice axe. By the time you really need crampons, you probably want a rope and some other gear as well...

I have limited experience with ice axe but would suggest getting the longest available as it can be better used as a walking pole (handy walking up ice covered rocky creeks etc) I'd be tempted to give the crampons a miss unless you have someone to show you the ropes so to speak/or do a course as said above. This is all based on what I've used Tahr hunting, if your planning on mountain climbing I wouldn't have a clue

Crampons didn’t work with my boots. Have now got some Kahtoola KTS crampons coming

    Nope

Ice axes are designed to be used on the uphill side, so generally need to be shorter than you think. The traditional way to work out the size is if you have your hand relaxed by your side, with palm on top of the axe, the spike should be around your ankle. I'm 175cm tall and use a 60cm axe (that's the length of the shaft, excluding the spike and the head).
