Kia ora all.
I do have to apologize to Jacob from Piercing The Darkness on the delay of this review. I was the winner of his very generous Giveaway last year, thank you again for providing this for the forum.
Jacob was very prompt on his delivery, and i was like a kid on Christmas morning receiving a gift. Initial inspections i was surprised at the initial size, as i had my mind set on it being a barrel mounted torch. But once i got it out of the packaging and in my hand the feel was lightweight and great quality.
The Cyansky H5GT comes with
- 21700 5000mAh Lithium 3.7v Rechargeable Battery with USB C
- USB C Charging Cable
- Holster
- Lanyard/Wrist Strap
- Spare Orings & Rear Switch Boot
- Manual
The Prize also included the barrel mount, very simple to use.
Initially i had nothing planned to give it a test run, but I fully charged the battery and had a tutu that evening, it became my regular house torch. Easy to pick up and go, when i would normally dig a headlamp out of the draw to check on the dogs, or pop outside in the night for a few things. I've never used the Holster but the wrist strap is perfect for the added safety from dropping.
As summer dragged on My father-law and I popped out for a pest shoot on a local farm, his usual set up is a spot light plugged into the quad and ride around. I put my .22 in my gun bag and chucked the H5GT in as well. We pulled up on the farm and before we could get to the shed to park up i had the H5GT out and on medium power scanning the paddocks. The brightness on the H5GT in the open paddocks far exceeded what i expected. After spotting a few critters we decided to park up and walk the race 1 person spotting with the H5GT the other picking off the bunnies. A handful of rabbits down we unloaded the bike to set up the spotlight/quad bike combo.
Safe to say the old fashion spotlight did not get used for the night after comparing the big handheld bulb technology to the H5GT LED, we set off on foot with the H5GT in hand a couple of head lamps and done one hell of a job on the pest numbers. On high power we had no issues spotting rabbits out to 100-150m in the long grass or possums in tree's. When popped onto turbo to focus in for the shot you could light the critter up brighter than it was daytime. The H5GT does heat up when in Turbo, so short bursts is recommended. The only issue i had was the accuracy of my .22LR out to that range.
I've since been out on many of solo pest hunts, the H5GT on the barrel mount with a good headlamp is a lethal combination I've found. (I think i need to upgrade my head lamp Jacob)
The barrel mount has soft touch inside the clamps so not to damage the bluing on the barrel or the finish on the H5GT. The lightweight of the H5GT is hardly noticed when I've got the mount closer to the stock. As I'm not "spotting" with the H5GT on the rifle its easy to shoulder the rifle, keep a steady hold and shoot as accurately my rifle will allow.
Safe to say what used to be an effort to "pop out" for a pest shoot is now as simple as throwing a few things in the gun bag and walking out the door. When you cant get out into the bush, walking the paddocks isn't too bad either.
If you're looking for a new torch, headlamp, or a Christmas gift for someone get in touch with Jacob from Piercing The Darkness @Night_Into_Day you wont be disappointed.
Sorry, I do not have any personal images of the in field quality. I'll try remember next time to take my phone along and capture a few.
