Thread: Finally got a thermette

I may be wrong but thought all the P and T (chorus today) and council guys had them too.
They are quick and when everybody smoked they were the go.
Everybody had an ignitor.
Pretty safe too as you only put enough sticks, manuka etc in to boil it so not much in the way of embers.
If you don't have a copper one you need to dry them out so rust doesn't get to them.

I understand that after WW2 the Germans wanted to know how the NZ and Aussie troops could sit down have a brew then carry on fighting so quickly. They always knew where our soldiers had been by the round ash piles they left behind

Hey, are many folks still using the likes of Thermette kettles? I know people like to collect old ones from a collector's perspective but what about regular camping use etc?

I'm having a big clear out and have a hardly used Gillie Kettle https://www.ghillie-kettle.co.uk/.

These are the types of items I love but have a garage full of stuff that just doesn't get used enough, so time to part with some of it.

Just trying to get a feel, if it's worth trying to sell or just give away / bin it. Otherwise I'll end up packing it in a box and moving it to next house, oh that's how it got where I am now :-)

Chuck up a photo and a price, I'm interested at the right price, I'm others may be too.

This brings back many memories. Dad had a copper thermette that went green between uses and a clean with a hand full of shingle and water made it usable but I still remember the taste.It seemed to require resoldering regularly. I bought a tin one from the Scout shop but it rusted out. I built a stainless steel one and it will out last me.

I got busy and the Ghillie Kettle got boxed, along with several other old aluminum billies, which I'll probably never use again. They're not worth anything but I hang on to them because I'm sure I'll need them one day ;-)

I used to be indecisive but now I'm not sure.

The old man just have me the family Thermette. He's 89 so doesn't think he will use it much. But I grew up with that thing, surfcasting at the beach, and on family camping trips. Always a cup of tea would be made. I remember the fun of lighting the fire and the instant lesson if the handles got a bit hot. He used to fill a plastic bag with twigs and offcuts and store it in the base ready for a quick cuppa.
I managed to get a natty bag for it so the soot wont get everywhere, and have ordered a cooking ring to try too.

Family treasure mate! Enjoy the brews it will produce!

years back a mate who tutored at the local high school in engineering turned up on the way to the recyclers with a whole trailer heaped full of stainless steel thermettes made by pupils. Thought I might want one or ten, so picked out 6 tippidy top ones for mates and family. Still got one or two? under the house. Must dig them out. A bit slower to heat as they’re built with a heavy gauge stainless, but easy keep and clean with no rust or tainting.
