If you watch the jager pro guys using them there is no problems with id. Were are talking about sensible ranges here.

I would think just identifying a heat source with it and then use proper night vision to identify and shoot would be OK?
Being over gunned is under rated.

Thats true. I have a client in the North who uses a FLIR thermal ($17K) unit to spot animals, They then use scope mounted XR5 nightvision units ($14.5K) in conjunction with a Infrared laser designator to light the animal up at 850mts and check out the antlers before shooting witha 338 Lapua Mag (or it was something similar).
Im assured it works quite well !!!!!.

Are we just getting lazier as race(human)???? I just dont get guys using this shit to hunt, same as night vision on scopes wtf!!!!!! If you can get one during light hrs theres no excuse to fuck them over while they are asleep. In the short time in this game im seeing why its having its problems. And why its becomming a big earner.........ah fuck it each to there own i guess. Good luck using that shit in our neck of the woods better spend a measly 600 on a PLB becuase your gonna need it when you tip over a bluff the thermal gear didnt warn you about.

I reckon it would be mint as for shooting big mobs of pigs at night. bait up for a week or so then go blitz the mob.

I want to know, if anyone has done it, if a thermal unit is better at finding possums in trees over a spotlight?

Anyway, obviously, this stuff should all be private land and I don't care how you hunt on that. It's only paddock hunting, and that's just meat for the family and friends how ever I can get it

If you look at the pictures carfuly you will see the animals still have to be clearly seen to be Identified. How many of you thought the first picture was of Pigs and not Cattle until you read the caption.
The 2 guys I know who bought Thermal for hunting got rid of it pretty quick and replaced it with Night Vision Goggles.
Just my 2 cents worth but I am pretty experianced with this sort of equipment.
Pretty big pigs at that range?! - that wasn't on zoom either (up to 4x)

I wouldn't be even thinking of shooting at night at that range - its up to the user to interpret and ID what they are viewing - same as the day really

Thermal in the country and sea is very very good at showing you things you would't "See" with either eyes, binos or NVG - day or night

yep - same as anything, spot it, work out what/get closer etc etc - then either NV scope (you can get day NV scope attachments that work on normal scopes; so you don't need a dedicated setup) or a spot light

Or use it during the day ...
