Take a look at the crkt Fossil, it is a reasonably powerful knife, really easy to make sharp. I would probably not take it on the top of a mountain, but for short hunts general stuff to do, works fine.

Used to work with a guy in Auckland who started making knives. Knapo knives. Some interesting ones there.
Thats good, I actually ordered it straight after I wrote that post, been in my pocket since. It is a nice knife to use and much more precise to feeling than the Spyderco. The only down side is I cant open it with one hand, which was handy with the Spyderco when sailing, hand through the lanyard and open. Might have to get something else for that (unfortunately cheap knives dont do to well when it turns to custard and you have to cut through a few vectran / spectra or dyneema lines)
