Beauty of having deer on your doorstep I spose. I leave the ass in while carrying to stop some blood.
Hock and clean it up when I get home with another knife.
My gut hook is a wee gerber folding.
Wouldn't have the length to do the ass end the way I do it anyway.

Was taught about leaving the poo tube in some time ago. Great way to keep your arse clean.

If using a gut hook found a Mercator or similar was needed for around the bum

Yup my Mercator is almost exclusively a bum and bird knife these days

Just a question, does anyone use those push dagger like skinning knives? Or are they banned like they are in the UK?

Have one (Gerber... Something saw same one briefly on Hunter adventures) great for jobs needing a SHARP blade but feels strange in the hand and blade is very flexible so doesn't work well for task like cutting kindling etc round camp.

I have a havelon and gerber. They're meant for finer details of head skinning. I have seen yanks and Canadians cape and breakdown a whole moose with one.

I bought one for doing a few homekill sheep, but found that with the depth of the hook ( about 10mm on my one) I could still cut the guts with the point of the hook as I went toward the brisket. Went back to a skinning knife and the split finger method

I now go the other way brisket up.
Find it works for me.
Noticed that is the way guys I know do their pigs.
Dairy farmers that can do pigs without a problem but haven't a clue on sheep.
Do not use fingers just "delicate" with the knife.
Funny how you can change from what the old man taught us 40+ years ago.

I have one of these someone gave me years ago. As others have said I only really use it for skinning, works o.k for quickly unzipping hide though.

Mostly use gutless method but if gutting reckon the two fingers trick beats this hands down.

Yeah I have a havalon as the backup/second knife. Really handy for skinning and tight work. Have done whole deer with it as well, you just need to be careful when popping ball joints etc.

So, tried it and worked like a dream. Unzipped the skin on an animal in one movement. I’ve decided to buy a smaller gut hook knife as my main hunting knife.

The knife that Shootm kindly sent me is now surplus. You can either have it back, or I’ll pass it on to the next forum member. First dibs Shootm, after that first come, first served.
