Interesting comments about the wires pulling out, I was looking at how the cables are attached to my Fenix and they have good cable anchors where they go into the lamp and battery pack (see photo's), so I would think it's more lightly that the head lamp would be pulled off your head before the cables break, but I stand to me corrected. These kickass for the price. Its what i run as my main light now.
I've got one of these as well for walking in the dark. Amazing performance for the money. I use a small Black Diamond one around camp.

I have a heap of cheap ones....a good coast brand one that has the external wire issue..but still goes very well.then Landsar gave me a wee Phoenix that takes a single AA battery housed inside simple tube. Only three light levels and quite simple it's a bloody brilliant wee unit.perfect to walking or around camp.for more light eg past fifty yards I use hand torch.

I have the Nitecore HC65 (version 1) they are awesome, the new V2 is plastic so id try and find the earlier version if you go this way.

Love my nitecore hc65 and 68. Only thing they are missing is a lock out function, but a tiny turn on the battery cover and they cant turn on. They do have the annoying strobe tho.

The 2 or 3 higher powered options from piercing the darkness. Only about $100 and the one I got is fantastic

I have an HC65 (v1) and a D25LR (looks like there has been a slight update with these too)

If your primary use/reason is the red light - go for the 25. Much stronger than the nitecore there. The red on my nitecore is enough for walking a decent track at night, but not quite there for rough or overly uneven going, in my experience. The 25 is a solid step brighter on red, noticeably better.

That said, I prefer the modes of and trust the nitecore a bit more, so I use that as my primary unless I’m specifically wanting the extra red strength of the 25lr. I do still tend to take the 25lr empty as a spare when heading backcountry, as it really is nice and lightweight.

The 25LR has multiple levels of the red too, unlike my nitecore, which only has the one, with a secondary slow red flash.

    Both good lights.

My vote goes to Fenix as a brand.
Self confessed gear freak. Have several lights, but I just can’t fault the Fenix quality.

Did an unplanned night descent on a steep southern alps face, with a little Lenser running 3 AAA.
I’d found it great up until then, seemed quite bright, and was very light. All plastic.
That night, it was like having a candle. My mate had a much gruntier light, without that we may not have found a way down…

It also spurred a change to all gadgets running usb C charging, so one power cable, one battery and I’m sorted..
    Bought a Fenix HM 65R.
Super bright when needed, and still good around camp.

I have two Nitecore Headlamps, the HC60 v2 and the NU30. The HC60 is up 1200 lumens, it does have a strobe option and doesn't have a red light option. The NU30 is up to 500 lumens and does have a red light which is surprisingly bright. The HC60 was about $120 from memory and the NU30 was $60.

They are great headlamps and definitely recommend them.
