I had one which I gave to a mate in Africa. It was razor sharp and beautifully tempered. I regret that now as I have yet to find one that was as good. The steel is generally good and you can actually buy blank blades so that could be an option for you. The just diy sheath.

I have used this for the past 15 years as a camp tool. I got mine in a tool stall in a bazaar in Eastern Nepal - its not big only weighs about 400g. Its the typical size and what all the locals used for everything. Made them out of old railway line. Super sharp when you get the technique right will chop up surprisingly large bits of stuff. I have a bigger one and it sits as a ornament at my mum and dads - no where near as handy to use. I worked in Darjeeling in the late 2000's when the local Gorkhas were agitating for their own state within India - people were getting the chop with these things on a weekly basis.
Gerber Gator Kukri Machete | Trade Me
I use one of these, cheap enough, needed work to get a decent edge, but does the job, splits small firewood, slashes. And not too bothered if I lose it or break it. Bought it in a combo deal from Gerber a few years ago, came with a small handsaw and a fixed blade knife (great salami cutter)
@ROKTOY had a look at Gerber and cold steels offerings but most don't have the hinge point (cho) that allows the blade to flex. Ordered one of the guys I mentioned earlier, will see what I think of it, if it's too heavy I'll just have to go to peal an find a smaller one! It's been on my to do list for a few years now
Himilayan imports are the kamis (blade makers) for the royal house and they make good stuff, that is actually made in Nepal (avoid cheap Indian rubbish) they use old Mercedes car springs or toyotas when they can't get the mercs, its 5150 steel, it has a differential temper with the back being soft and the edge being hard. Best model is the m43 I think, it's got the right angle for the swing and it's full tang, was not a problem to bring them in when I got one, only thing is the sheaths are poo, the blades are thick and heavy, if you screw up a swing then you can easily lose something you were attached to.
condor makes a fairly good imitation one, heavy duty kukri, that has a way better sheath and also has the cho you are after.
I did a chopping test a while back with one of these, my HI, a tomahawk and my Svord golok, golok out chopped everything and was still sharp afterwards, I like the look and romance of the khukuri but for performance I will take my golok.
