Cheers found this link https://www.facebook.com/WattsCraftN...1374387612588/ you reckon that is thin dyneema they are using? I have 100m of braided 14mm rope and it has some weight and takes up a bit of space.

14mm is way to thick. I have 10mm and even that is probably overkill

The best ground anchor I have found is my Defender for the Hilux's to get through @MSL

That may have been the one built by a good mate of mine, I think he sold them as the "Salmon Winch". Had a really nice cast alloy housing with the drum out front and and it bolted to either a Stihl 66 or 88 Magnum powerhead... I can't remember which. Yeah he had em on TM for a while and short vids on Youtube of pulling logs and boulders around a paddock. Did a quick search but can't find any reference to it now sadly.

We have another thread on the original winch I made and I still have this one in the shed as well

I kept the Tecumesh 2 stroke on it and apart from being loud it’s still powerful.

The main issue there is, the defender can’t make it far enough to be used as a ground anchor for the hilux. Ground anchor is no use if it’s stuck with three wheels still on the sealed road

Never caught up with what happened to that, it was probably very spendy but what a design - I still can't find anything equivalent commercially.
Is that the unit used to tighten the turn buckle chains on the log ships, they are a nice unit, 12 volt Makita drill, modified thru, I don’t know how many ratios.
