What's this about de-doming? What does that do to the light output, illuminated area or or whatever?? I'm intrigued.

If you look closely at an LED you will see a clear silicone dome oner the top. This provides a bit of focus directing the light forward and some mechanical protection for the wires and the chip surface. It is not very efficient at directing the light and when removed allows the light to go sideways where it gets captured by the much more efficient reflector of the torch. The net result of removing the dome is usually a 110% increase in intensity of the hot spot of the torch.

well i had a crack at de doming one of my cheaper led flashlights and it seemed pretty straight forward, just let the flashlight heat up pull it apart and popped the dome off with a knife (gadgetmans most likey cringing right now) although bit worried about doing my good stuff....

That's pretty close to how I do them. Most people pull them apart and soak the LED in petrol for 5-7 hours.

About 3 seems to do it. The dome just floats off

Just had my hands on the new torch. Done the de-dome in less than 5 minutes. Really nicely made and light weight.

    Time to spend some money.

    Led Lenser SEO5 LED Headlamp - 6105

and rate it better than my H14 as it has no wanky battery compartment at the back of your head

Haven't done one, but looking them up there would be no point. Just not the right type of torch. That is more of a flood light where these Maxtochs are long distance throwers.

I'll need to buy myself one or two of these new torches and de-dome them for myself.

They wont work as the light is channelled by the lens rather than a reflector. It relies on the dome being present.
