    Myth I reckon. After all, don't they share the masts to a large degree?
    I recall reading somewhere that the number of bars showing signal strength actually don't mean much, as there is no industry standard on them.

    You are correct. The bars mean whatever the bloke programming them intended them to mean. There is a hidden settings menu in most phones that will tell you the raw db reading or better yet install this app:

    It will tell you all the info you want and also comes with two widgets (one for cellular and one for wifi) that will give you a accurate signal quality reading right on your home screen. I use this on all my devices.
