Awesome, thanks for the answers guys. Been meaning to get one for a while, at that price can't say no, will order one next payday
Ordered one late Wednesday from Skippersmate, arrived Monday. Quick & good service, very happy. All registered and good to go (hopefully won't have to though!!)
Thanks again for the info guys
The additional benefit is my wife is a lot more relaxed when I go on a solo trip with my PLB too.
[QUOTE=bigbear;623202]bigbear; not sure where you are getting the 15 minutes and going to aussie centre not nz. All NZ coded and other country beacon's signal go to the nearest LUT (local user terminal - satellite station). In the NZ, Taupo will be the first point of contact. If it is NZ coded, then RCCNZ in Wellington will be advised of signal. Au coded both Au & NZ. It is only the registered emergency contact information that is with the respective beacon's HEX ID country code. If NZ want to know who it is, they just contact that country's database centre. They are all SaR within a global network.

Always carry on yourself and not the backpack... you go one way and the pack the other... bugger!!
And make sure they are registered and info is UPDATED regularly.
NZ PLBs are a global use item as well. Just the same as me coming to NZ with my Au one and being treated by RCCNZ no different than any model or country beacon activated. They don't give a "rats". They just go to help! Registration of emergency contacts just makes it easier for them to know what they are "walking / flying into"...
Help those helping you...

If you ever activate one, NEVER switch it off and on thinking you are saving battery power. As Moutere stated, PLB's are designed to transmit for a minimum of 24 hours and so once activated not only the satellite needs to pick up your signal, but the PLB also transmits a VHF signal for the chopper overhead and the LandSAR ground trackers.
