    Balance on one foot.
Close eyes and count to 10 slowly.
    Then swap to other leg.
You can practice this anytime. Boiling the kettle is a good one.
With your eyes closed you will find it hard to keep that balance. All those little muscles around your ankle, that you don’t usually use will work overtime.
I’m now up to 20 seconds on each foot. If I put my foot down during the time I start again.
This has really helped me. Hope it might work for others out there.
Someone once told me that barefoot through sand dunes works too.
Might be a bit hot for that now though...
    Use enough gun

I use Grisport hikers in summer and currently La Sportivas for winter. Never had a problem with my ankles until I rolled one 18 months ago, now its a weak as anything so been using the standing on one leg exercise from Sideshow and its helping but still need more strength in it.

For single foot standing exercises also try a big square cushion or two on the ground and try balancing standing one foot in the centre of that. Then with eyes closed. Physio gave me this exercise to strengthen a foot I mangled in a stupid bike crash (put foot in between front fork and wheel at about 35kph). Very effective exercise.
