    There is a couple of downsides to using a phone which is why I still use a GPS.

    One is it's easy to loose and where do you keep it. I lost a phone in the kaimanawas, fell out my pocket and my compass saved my ass. My GPS is on a string that's either around my neck and in a chest pocket or in a pouch on my belt with the string attached to the belt. Pretty hard to loose that way and it's easy to access when needed.

    The other is when it's pissing down. Try using a touch screen when its wet, your tired and grumpy and just want to get back to camp.
