Thread: Raincoats. What is the best....

I have a Tahr, what I dont like is the way it holds water and gets heavy and makes noise. For actually hunting, not just walking around it is hard dare I suggest it, to beat a swanny - it will get heavy but it will be quiet and warm and you will shoot a deer.

Why is no one suggesting NZ Game Gear ?? good stuff at good prices

Far superior to the modern Swazi jackets imo

I run the Kuiu stuff, lighter and still waterproof - but if I was pushing through scrub all day I would go with a heavier fabric like a Swazi Tahr.
It does annoy me they are short - if they made a long cut like a Swanny they would be awesome

Swazi or Cactus of you want it to work and work for a long time. Look after them and they last.
I have Kuiu rain gear and its lightweight and works, but is far from durable. Mine had tears after the first tahr trip - annoying for $1000 plus gear.
I always throw my Swazi Tahr in is I need a jacket to rely on. Will buy a Cactus Raincoat next to see how they go, they look good.

Try washing it in sports wash and then Nikwax DWR wash in. Should solve that.

Nope. It is the Interior membrane that is waterproof and air permiable. The exterior fabric is only there to protect the interior membrane. You will get better breathability after the dwr refresh as it will prevent the outer layer wetting out which creates a water seal against the waterproof membrane.

@Moa Hunter Not rainproof; but I bought a Game Gear Swampy when they were on special for $125 during lockdown. It's bloody brilliant. If it is anything to go by their gear seems to be extremely well made

I got one of their full blast coats a couple of years back. Its good.

Kaiwaka Sealtex Parka has been my pick for a few years. Goretex or any other breathable nylon jackets don't last long enough for me with full time bush work. I prefer to spend less and layer underneath appropriately now.

I have the Earth sea sky Hydrophobia as my full on winter coat. Made in NZ. Had it for a few years now and goes well. Nice and long so you can wear shorts and your clothes stay dry. Good weight for durability.

if your coat cant handle scratchy vege or is down right noisy in the bush...wear it UNDER a polarfleece....light weight polarfleece weighs stuff all when wet as water just runs through it and out the bottom. Ive got a superlightweight nylon bumfreezer jacket that has saved my bacon more times than I care to remember...it keeps most of rain off torso,keeps ALL the wind out,and makes pretty good bag to wrap meat in when chucking it in backpack.

That's what we did when polarfleece first arrived, over the top of a nylon jacket.
Did the job.
Still have a swanni.

If you don't "need" camo then I'd be looking at jackets made for mountaineering etc, especially the heavier duty versions (which are still light compared to most hunting jackets). Good, Lightweight mountaineering gear is designed to bring maximum performance for minimum weight. My main jacket is an Arcteryx Alpha SV. It's expensive but miles ahead of hunting jackets for function and protection (imo). I was at a shoot on the West Coast last November, pissed down all day and I was dry all day. Mates with their cool looking camo jackets had wetted out by midday and were soaked through completely and cold.

I was pretty tempted by a Jottnar jacket, but got my Arcteryx in a 50% off end of season sale
