    Re-waterproofing Goretex

I’ve got two Swazi Thar coats which are not that old. One in particular has become extremely leaky around the shoulders and neck.
Can anyone recommend a good product to wash them in. I look after my gear and they are regularly washed etc. thanks in advance

Nikwax wash on. Follow the instructions to wash and soak treat
Get a Nikwax spray also and spot treat the shoulders and elbows occasionally and it will last for years

I find the Geko guard spray on works well and it’s easy to use.

Also keep your goretex jacket carefully rolled up in a gear bag

The thing that breaks down the waterproofing most is having it loosely stuffed in your pack or daypack and getting it in and out all the time.
That is harder on the treatment than actual use

    Used to be me
Mine was in and out of daypack a few times a week all year round
Hadn't realized that was damaging the waterproofness

Now it's rolled up and sealed un a dry bag
Still in and out of pack all the time but not crumpled differently every time.

And gets carefully dried after use and always rolled the same way.

Might as well make them last as long as possible because good ones are expensive and hard to find what I like

Just remember once the goretex begins to fail the membrane and breathability is not there anymore, so in effect you are turning your expensive breathable goretex into a standard simple barrier coat where you are touching up the waterproofing.

It's one of the issues with goretex, once the membrane starts to go it's done unfortunately.

And if you cant be arsed with all that do it yourself stuff, you can send it too Twin Needle and they will be-waterproof it for you for a nominal charge. Got my snowboard jacket done last year and they did a good job.

What @akaroa1 said with Nixwax. However, I have sent back a Swazi Kagoule to get inspected in the past as my shoulders were getting damp on walks around town. Turns out that there were tiny micro-holes - from hunting in the bush no doubt. Nothing a treatment can fix.

Better that you damaged it actually hunting and not treating it poorly when not in use.

I'm always quite pleased when I wear something out doing exactly what it's intended for.

    That's quite a challenge though

I’ve not had much joy with reroofing jackets. Be interested in how you go. By the time they start leaking I reckon the membrane is breaking down.

Same and the two expensive Goretex jackets I've had have been about as waterproof as a teabag, but that is a story for another thread.
