Thread: Rubber mats for ute tray & alternatives

Was getting the brain juices going... and thought there must be some good DIY ideas amongst the brains trust

Any good suggestions on budget friendly mats for a ute tray?
Getting a new work ute at the end of the year so not wanting to spend much. It's primarily to stop the chainsaw and chilly bin sliding around, when on tight corners, breaking etc.

astroturf works ok in base of dingy....it holds dirt n sand well,lots of sand will make it stay down.....easy to tip it out and shake off excess....

Besides a mat, this sort of thing is very useful

Not necessarily. My Ranger has a fitted-in corrugated ? HDPE tray liner and it's as slippery as hell. I'll never get another one. Anyway, when you have anything heavy with a flat base, bungies are hopeless on their own. That's why I suggested the concertina bar.

Get some outdoor carpet and cut to shape
Glue two velcros to carpet up both front corners
Glue a small piece of timber in the grooves of tray and then glue piece of thin tin to timber. Then glue other side of velcro to tin
That’s the front sorted
For the back fold the carpet and tuck under the plastic tray
Job done

Arb sports liners are better then your standard liner. Or get some 6x1 timber or 4x1. Two pieces about 700mm long each side of wheel arch and one piece about 1450mm right across deck couple off screws each side job done,
It means all the stuff you put right at the back stays there.

pretty water tight so far, no diff to the tub liners that get a pinhole or crack

Am not in that situation where i have to put whole animals in the back and process them in the back @7mmwsm But am not a 100% sure, yes i do know what you mean. Any animals i have put in the back have been hang so no blood or in a meat bag or fadge.
In my situation am glad i went with that type of liner

Whatever you get make sure it doesn't dissolve when you spill petrol onto it. That's a bugger as you invariably lose something out of a chainsaw, or tip a fuel can over and a lot of the cheaper materials are not solvent resistant. They either go bubbly as a bubbly thing which makes them useless as a liner as they are too deformed to be of use or worse dissolve then dry and adhere to the tray. I made up a liner base out of plywood with tiedown points and if needed you can screw to it. It is a neat fit into the hdpe liner so it can't slide anywhere. I have a Rolaworx tray bolted down to it at the moment...

Ply cut to shape as mentioned, can add synthetic carpet. The yanks have a neat system you don't see here,can flip one way out to the edge of a open tail gate or flipped back into the cargo area to create a smaller space.
