dedicated PLB for me. If I need to ever press that button I want the bloody thing to work. And half the reason I go in the hills is so people can't message me LOL

He seems like a complete muppet then it comes to putting himself and others at risk. I noted he has comments on that video disabled. Not surprising.
I was hunting with a couple of Aussies a month ago that knew and idolised that fella.
They are not to fond of and don't have anything to do with him now.

Do what ya want! Ya will anyway.
A bit like Bear Gylls then. Most outdoor instructors rip him for what he has people do. Credit to him though for encouraging some to adventure outside air conditioned shopping malls.
Problem is some of these type people through video editing make it look too easy, until it goes wrong then they tend not to show those parts, or worse try to gain following from it. This guy is prime example. Likely future Darwin award winner?
He seems to adamantly promote New Zealand as a place that you can showup to and shoot as many animals as you like, I don't really think he does any favours for the NZ Hunting community. He should be encouraging international hunters to use proper guides, IMO.
Could also work the other way.
If enough people see their hero hunter needing to activate a rescue, it might steer them to guides.
Once they make it harder to bring firearms into NZ it will work for everyone.
Too many Aussies treat the place as their own back yard.
I don't really have a problem with that. It is the idiots that take 100 rnds of ammo with them and shoot everything that moves.
Once Thar numbers are reduced in the ballot blocks they will lose interest or look for guides.
Over a 1000 were shot in 3 days last week.

yeah it was mine, 5 day delay for messages to get out. then a confused wife when she gets a text saying i'm somewhere when i;ve moved a few 100 kms to another area and no phone reception!
got emails back from inreach regarding thew delay... they are trying to say its the wrong contact number (same message convercation i have used in the past so the number is right) yet to get a decent helpful person on the end of the phone to get to the bottom of the problem
its why i always have a @CooeeBay PLB have always wondered about the big red byutton on the inreach. had the same happen years ago with an early SPOT decive, my end said messages sent but werent going through. had search and rescue show up in the helicopter checking on me as folks at home were getting concerned
I have a problem with my Inreach at present and now been a week with problem still not resolved
It wont send and receive and when does its 3 days later. The support number worked and have referred my problem to the USA to fix .
Liked the idea of being flexible able to tell wife whats going on staying longer etc .Seem Inreach not fit for purpose and now doubt i will have any faith in it .
As its new think im just going to give it back to the shop but i doubt thats going to work out well.
Wirehair
Its like anything, first impressions count. If you have a bad run with something the kiwi way is to write it off "its shit" - "it dont wont work" - "they're rubbish dont get one"
Conversely if its does what it says on the box and you never have any problems its great and you would recommend it.
Mine has work faultlessly in Fiordland, Landsborough, Molesworth and Ruahines.
I also carry a PLB. Now there is nothing to say that the PLB wont work either.
It is the risk we take when we go into the wilderness. We all know it, accept it and are prepared for it. Well I know I am, not sure if everyone out there is.
I ALWAYS have a contingency of where, when and what Im doing and the day to put the balloon up if not out.
I think the you tube vid is prob light on facts and heavy on a ill prepared person with buggerall experience and respect for NZ Alpine conditions.
Inreach works off the iridium network so multiple moving satellites which may or not be in-view when you want to send your message. Inreach units will keep trying to send your message till the land earth station acknowledges reciept (this does not guarantee delivery) where as spot trys to send it it 3 times and then calls it delivered!! Both use the same satellite system.
PLBs use different sat system which is geosynchronous (sats are stationary over equator)
I wondered how foolish this guy is and found this interview. It's him talking about that day. He's a sweary glory boy story teller for sure. Hoping he's not coming back to NZ anytime soon as he'll need rescued again, or recovered.

Guy needs to learn to read a map.
Every contour line tells a story.
