Thread: Scary Sharp system

Knife sharpening ..........the topic that never ends and has no definitive answers.

I currently use a Lansky system and although it works it just kills my hands and I can feel my life ebbing away as I slowly get the job done.

THERE MUST BE A BETTER WAY !

I like the Tormek and Wicked edge but the price is starting to get out there and I have other knife making tools I want to get.

Is anyone running the Scary Sharp system made in mighty NZ. looks very well made and thought out.
Just looking for feedback and thoughts on this system and also any others people are using.

I know @Puffin has been running an interesting thread and there have being many others so this is really an extension and a little more specific on a particular system.

Jump in guys, all idea's , feedback , opinions and random ramblings are appreciated.

@muzza, yep the new system looks good with a logical progression of the system . The rotating head is excellent advancement .

Yep does the job.

Yep it does but very slow and works better on small knifes and doesn't like flexible blades that much.

agree on the lanski...it works and takes a little time.Ive sharpened by eye for years but this system just lets me know angle is correct...the 2 rod ceramic set is awesome for putting an edge on something and works in a hurry.

That is a good description of my feelings towards the Lansky system. I like my recently acquired Warthog sharpener. I've written a few posts about it now, so won't go on. I'm not on commission!

Water stones.......

The t4 tormek is worth a look if you are not doing it for a living.

I bought the warthog sharpener the other day, got it home, had a play with it and just didn't like it. Does an ok job but just not the same as some nice hand stones. I've had the lansky as well but just couldn't get into that either.

I've got a set of water stones and you can bang out a knife bloody quick, if you really need to rip down a damaged edge a course stone will do it bloody quick. I only ever go as fine as 1080 grit and that's a smooth edge and razor sharp. Once you get hang of the angles it's bloody easy. Not for everyone, but for me it's quite relaxing.

I have the Lansky system and find it does not hold my small knives very well, it gets the job done but is not the best. Always wanted to try the Scary Sharp one but though it was too pricey.

Ok, so here we go, had the lansky got rid of it, not accurate or fast enough, still have the spyderco sharpmaker, best portable system if the edge is already made and you want a guided system, mostly collecting dust to be honest though, have the tormek, its good for chisels, planes, axes and scissors, for knives it’s ok, I use it sometimes, if I got the Japanese waterstone I might use it more.
Wicked edge, its damn expensiven stupidly so, but it’s also damn good, I can take a blunt knife and take it to 50000 grit with a mirror edge that you can push cut with, there is another grit level that will take it to 250000, but that does seem a little excessive.
Scary sharp, I have it, mine is the second generation, I have threee stones and an extra clamp for small blades as well as the regular clamp.
As long as you are happy with its limitations (three angles 50 degrees, 18 degrees and 12 degrees, and the stone supplied only go to 1200 grit). And you are happy using it in your shed and not the house, then it’s ok.
I also use my knife making belt grinder.
If you are in Auckland at some stage you are welcome to have a go on them, in fact I will lend you the scary sharp for a few weeks as I don’t use it much, I also have a 2 x 72 inch belt sander that’s collecting dust, it’s home made, since I bought a proper one I have not used it.

Thanks Shelly, good to get feed back on the various systems you have tried.
I have started using my little 1 x 30 belt grinder and with a bit of practice have started getting pretty good results and it's quick.
I will head down this path and between the grinder and some refinement with waterstones and ceramic rods I should get a nice edge.

Thanks for the offer of trying the scary sharp but I am in central otago so might have to pass on that one.

I have the Edge pro and love it. Thought about the scary sharp and like the fact its made in NZ, but looks too messy, and oversize for smaller knifes
