Spare key for trigger lock in the ammo pouch/jacket etc., so you when you get to the shooting spot and forgot to take it off at home you can still shoot.
    Didn't happen to me BTW

try a few different types of scope on your rifle particulaly if you are a bush hobbit and most shots will be up close n personal....you SHOULD be able to close your eyes throw rifle up to shoulder and when you open eyes be pretty mush lined up through scope, like using a well fited shotgun. I own a nice bolt action .308 and tried two different 3x9x40mm scopes on her and yes it worked well and yes I shot animals with it but it just didnt feel quite right.....I then tried an old M8 4X loopy and holy smoke Batman she is a completely different beast now, comes up like a wet dream... oh and while on subject of scopes unless you are out hunting open country and going to be shooting past say 500 yards regulary you DONT NEED a super huge heavy 6-126 power scope.....yes its nice to be able to zoom in a bit more for the longer resting shots (used 9x on pig at 150ish yards yesterday) but in reality you can shoulder shoot big game all day long happily with no more than 4x maybe 6 if out in open....guys did it for years and years before vari powers got more reliable, the theory that fixed power scopes had less to go wrong still holds true today.

Years ago I knew a bloke who culled goats for Doc , he traveled miles through rough terrain in all sorts of weather and conditions .
To say he travelled light was an understatement all he carried each day was a large bum bag and even then he complained about the extra weight and inconvenience .
He used to shake his head at my little backpack and say we are here to hunt not relocate to a new town .
I watch youtube vids of guys these days carrying a 70 litre pack for a day trip I cant imagine what he would say about that .
Travel as light as you can safely .

There is the odd place I hunt where I know I'm coming out with an animal or two, not doing that with a little day bag!

It was loaded, with another 4 or so in the mag. The last guy to use it (also a guest) had taken it for a stalk, and forgotten to unload it when putting it away.

I still cringe a little when I think how close I came to blowing out a large expensive window.

Assume whatever firearm you're holding is loaded until proven otherwise.
    best tip so far.

I know what your saying , and I agree .
I suppose what I was getting at is that there are guys carrying so much gear in their big packs during a day hunt that they would struggle to carry much meat out anyway
There are essentials for safety and then the basic necessities of a hunt , but after that ................

I'm a bit guilty of carrying a big pack but I love the way I can stand it on it's end and use it as a rest when there is nothing else about.

I think the single best (and cheapest!) thing I've ever done in hunting is make a DIY "Z Aim" sling.

I've just used it for three days in the bush and it was awesome.

I like the look of that, I’ve just spent a day in the bush with my thumb behind my sling trying to hold it on my shoulder

It’s one of those things that is so simple, but so damn good! Takes a little bit of time to get the lengths of webbing right, but after that, it’s good to go. One extra tip, when setting it up, do it with your backpack on.
