    How do you like cru wear @Tahr ? Thinking of getting some in to play with, sounds like it has awesome edge stability so can be run thin bte and very hard

    its great. Edge holding better than 3V but not quite as tough. Stains a little bit more than 3V but is still way better than the old carbon steels.

    Not much in it between the 2 but because Cru-Wear has better edge holding and is plenty tough enough its my pick.

    A lot of information on You Tube from guys like Walter Sorells, covers a vast amount of information from steel, abrasives, handles etc.
    There are knife supply places in Oz.
    Creative man
    Gameco Artisan supplies

    Watch a lot of You Tube as there is some great advice from seasoned makers that will get you moving in the right direction.

    Pretty simple tools needed to give it a go. Start with a simple steel, 1084 is the ubiquitous choice as it makes a damn good knife but can be successfully heat treated at home. That a couple of files, a drill and some sandpaper is really all you need

    As much as I love making hunting knives for clients within the hunting community I also enjoy the change of pace that a big kitchen knife makes.
    8 inch Venom K Tip chefs knife. Stainless full grind with Yellow / purple dual layer burlap Micarta from the states. Toxic yellow and black G10 liners and nice big fat carbon pins.
    Sharp and made to slice, food prep can be fun and carving the Venison roast made easy.

    Many flaws, like blade getting stuck when the wood swells from blood/water and other nasty shit getting stuck in the holes and moving parts. I can still smell goat buck oil in the blade slot. Yuck. But otherwise it has done me well, easy to sharpen. Father got me a couple of nice morakniv knives for christmas that I still need to use. Im just afraid of fucking up the blade as I am lousy at sharpening stainless steel. Need to find a good sharpening service in Dunedin.

    I've got a nasty old Opinel as well, only it's not nasty now as a generous forum member offered to clean it up. It's a family heirloom, although very little monetary value. My young son is looking forward to getting it when he is old enough. He will probably abuse like I did for many years. Those blades can be made damn sharp!

    I have a couple of these too that I uses as camp kitchen knives because of the nice thin blades. I pulled mine apart and took a little extra wood out of the blade slot to compensate for the wood swelling. They don't jamb up any more.

    I’m not in Dunedin, but if you post them to me I can sharpen stainless no problems at all, come back shaving sharp, with a mirror polish.

    Been ages since I finished anything. 1095 carbon steel ktip with hamon, black g10, canvas micarta handle with hidden pins. Super thin geometry, mean cutter.

    Sweet. If i can't find a satisfactory service locally I will give you a message and we can figure out pricing. Ive tried sharpening stainless steel with spyderco triangle sharpening system and with basic stones but I can never keep the angle consistent. With carbon steel it is easy because I can keep the angle consistent for the very few strokes necessary to sharpen it.

    That is bloody beautiful aesthetic knife. Looks like the sort of thing that would sell for over 150+ dollars each if a designer logo was slapped onto it.
