@hotbarrels , both really but the tool rest has a piece of steel clamped on so that problem / modification has been sorted. The Platen measures a grand area of 25 mm x 55 mm so it's a small area to maintain an even contact with.
However it does get the job done and I have grown quite fond of what another knife maker calls my " Pencil Sharpener"

Ok guys, lockdown has afforded me time for knife making. Here is knife 01.
I have had help from Shelley who sold me his old punishing machine and gave pointers on how to rebirth it back to good working order.
He also kindly did the heat treatment on it and I took it home and tempered in the oven.

3mm 01 tool steel, full flat grind, shaving Sharp with a forced patina.

i did my first one a few weeks ago. will start #2 soon but unfortunately need a cutoff disc to chop down an old cleaver before i start.

Cool troppo, think I saw that Skinner in Damascus steel. Been a good tinker with the sun coming in through open shed door.

Love the Blue Jean @kotuku . Dad used one for the better part of 40 years on the farm but had it stolen out of his wagon a couple of years ago. Have been looking for one for a present for his 60th. Anyone have any clue where I might be able to find one?

ive got a barazilian skinner in my collection ,but one on a fit of bordedom Itook to a skilsaw blade and made my own version .rough as guts handle was two bits of ply lying around in the shed glued onwithy builderas adhesicve thewn wrapped with insulation tape -it got a rough as guts sheath too .its part of me Bbq kit,hangs round me guts off a bit of dog chain i founds .considering the qaulity of workmanship its suprisingly sahrp and will slide through most meats .
i also made a highland dirk out of a hi speed industrial hacksaw blade carefully worked with angle grinder and carefully hones .handle is wooden covered in leather with a syntheitc cairgorm jewel in the top .sheath -again wooden covered in leather.use old bear cans for the brass fittings -bit manky now but they could be replaced .
yes i wore in on parade when i was in the pipeband and it even did a haggis ceremony.
again blade may be thin but hell it keeps its edge.

The knives I made in previous years at a forge in Nelson. To be honest they've only ever been used to cut cheese and salami... but I like them nonetheless

Nice looking knives,like the grain of the wood and the brass.

picked some up while walking yesterday, still cant get the dark colour off, from one black-sticky skin I tried to remove...so maybe the goopy black ones would work ?

Lockdown day 15

Hunting knife made from old Wüsthof breadknife.
Totara scales made from wife's old fruit bowl, which she happily donated in return for a new hunting knife.
Red micarta G10 liners and brass pins.
Leather sheath weathered look finished with olive oil, home made vinegaroon and some excellent leather creme from @Puffin.

Bit of drilling work.

I never thought to tape together and drill the whole lot.
