Had my 550 cutting bone dry Manuka this arvo, like a hot knife through butter since I reset the cutters after some very dirty wood.

It’s been drying for a while but even at 42% moisture content it’s exhibiting weapons grade defiance to sharp chains


It’s actually Eucalyptus Botryoides (southern Mahogany)

Great fun though

That's go close to doing it. A much better show than my 460 that had a hard intake boot - every time the handle flexed to the engine the revs changed. Put the saw down it's near stall, pick it up and the revs would go back to normal. Had me confused as hell until I worked it out - the dam boot had gone hard at the cylinder end and was flexing under the clamp which was causing a slight leak.

Stihl 461 getting it done with a 32"bar in red gum

This little Shindaiwa really punches above its weight. I needed a smaller saw than my dad's old Jonserad to use when up ladders and for smaller jobs. I talked to the small engine repair guy in town who was a great mechanic, a real trustworthy old school guy. Not long beore he had replaced the buggered engine on my mower with a 2nd hand one and only charged me $120. About 6 years later it's still going strong!

He said not to get a smaller saw from one of the big names because their small saws were built to the same specs as those you can buy at Bunnings. He said he used to be a Shindaiwa rep and said they use the same build standard as their big saws for the small ones. He had no skin in the game and he'd never bullshitted me. This little saw has just kept chugging along; even on big jobs that it isn't really designed for. Shindaiwa are a Japanese brand and he said it has always flown under the radar...

He was partially correct. Shindaiwa don’t make the super budget type saws that you can buy from other brands. But both husqvarna and stihl make excellent small saws in the professional and commercial categories, neither of which are available from Bunnings. I’ve got a shindaiwa 362t, and it is very impressive. It is also much cheaper and every bit as good as the comparable models from the aforementioned competitors.

Been getting some big Kanuka that has come down the river after the Cyclone. One of the few benefits of the storm, worth grabbing it wile its there. The silt is not nice on the chain of my Stihl 461 but have a few old chains to use, needs sharpening/touching up every half a tank



Splits so nicely too, counting the rings the bigger stuff is 100 years old.

Nice, I mean such a waste haha...
