Thread: small knife design , your input.

So as the Zombie apocalypse grinds on I thought I would put into motion a project I want to start at some point on the knife making front.
I have been thinking about a small fixed blade for Trout fishermen / Varmint hunters that maybe even able to process a deer as a back up knife or for capping and high attitude work.

Blade would be 80 mm approx and handle round 90 - 100 mm so reasonably compact , sharp and light.
Small leather sheath .
As we are all locked down I thought I would get anyone's / everyone's options and input , feel free to ask questions or tell me what you would like to see in this type of knife.
There are a lot of very experienced hunters and fresh water fisherman on here so I will be interested in what your thoughts and input is.

B for me. One of the best shapes I've seen in a long time in a small knife, I reckon you have it nailed. It will do just about everything and with the "belly" of the edge drawn back from the tip, it will retain its edge longer, everything else being equal. Robert Uddstrom (long since passed but one of NZ's most under rated knifemakers) explained this to me 40 years ago as he handed over a newly made knife (in D2 steel) to me as an 18 year old. I still have it and its still my knife of choice for everything except in the kitchen.

Don't use a thick stock to make these eh.

I like B. But here are 2 of my smaller knives...I do like the benchmade shape. 308 round for reference.

SVORD pheasant folder is pretty darn versitile....and the fold up bit is genius in its simplicity..... a blade shape with less belly like A but with recurved back like a bowie is my personal favourite style......green river bushmans friend is just about perfect general purpose knife for me. most pocket folders work fine. Ive processed deer with both sizes of the svord folder...much easier with the bigger one.

I prefer C blade shape of the 3 choices. But then until recently I had gone back to using a folder as a general purpose everyday / hunting knife.

C for me.

ELBACHO..........seems to be pretty much ideal for most jobs...well it gets the job done and havent really found a job it doesnt do well....not eggzachary sure if its the sharpness,sheath,price,shape or combination of all 4
it fits the bill of small fixed blade rather well....handle big enough to grip well with a bit to stop hand slipping onto blade is good too.

I'm liking A and I much prefer a drop point over the clip point. Doesn't give you much of a consensus then �� For a small knife I think the whole thing needs to be minimalist to achieve the desired result. I do like C but I think it will be too small to do a full size knife duty but too big to fit as a small knife.

C for me.

A or C for me, I also prefer drop point.

I'm with Shearer, blade A with C handle. Very universal drop point with a good natural grip.

For and wee fixed EDC knife, I'd put it the other way around.
